Should I get a SCAR 17

I'm looking for opinions on whether or not I should buy a SCAR 17. I have been wanting one since I knew they existed, I have never even seen one with my own eyes. I have tried 3 different AR-10's and they all jammed on me so I didn't keep them. I tried one FAL, and kinda liked it, but I would rather get something light, accurate, and ergonomic, and reliable. I feel like the FAL fails on two of those. Obviously people value money differently, I'm mainly looking for opinions on if it would be my best choice, not whether people would buy one for themselves. I want to use it as a multi purpose gun. Range, zombies, hunting.

I wanted a Scar 17 the instant I heard they were going to make them for civilians, and I got one.Pretty much for the same reasons you want one except for zombies.I use 5.56 for them.Get a black one, they have much greater accuracy than the Fat Dark Earth ones.

If I could afford one I would get it. I think FN makes fantastic stuff across the board. Their products are well thought out and everything is where it should be. If you don't like the trigger, Geissele makes a replacement one that is supposed to be good.

I've got a SCAR 16 and it's very well made and thought out.

Unlike a lot of other modern rifles, 'How can we make it cheaper' doesn't seem to have been a deciding factor in the design.

It depends on what your priorities are with the rifle. If you want a light recoiling, accurate .308 then No.

If you want a light rifle, with a folding stock and battle rifle accuracy will suffice, then Yes.

No-one ever mentions it, but the SCAR series is more or less a copy of the HK G36 with a less friendly gas system, as far as serviceability is concerned.

Less friendly gas system how?

The gas system consists of two parts, the gas regulator and the piston, which has 3 replaceable rings. The gas regulator requires a bullet tip or screwdriver to depress its retaining plunger. The gas piston requires a special tool or rifle cleaning rod for removal.

The SCAR's gas system is more complex than the G36's but you get a field adjustable gas regulator.

Cleaning isn't required until:
Inspect, clean, and lubricate weapon after approximately 1,000 rounds unsuppressed or 400 rounds suppressed or at end of day.

The piston has to be pushed out with a cleaning rod and doesn't clean up as easily as the HK piston. You don't need something to push the piston out with the HK gas system.

The HK system keeps the gas further away from the receiver and also vents it forward. The forward venting has advantages and disadvantages, depending on your perspective.

I'd love to have a SCAR17! If I had the cash I'd buy one so I say do it and live for all of us!:D

Of course, if the HK243 ever shows up in the US I'll be looking for one, too.

Have you weighed them? (I assume you have but don't consider that an issue - which is a personal thing). Have you priced them? (the H&K is the only .308 that can make the FN look inexpensive).
To the OP, I'm in the same position as yourself. Though I'd prefer a bull pup in .308, the only one out there right now is the KT and it's a non-starter. The FN is light, rugged, accurate and has a relatively modest recoil. Except for the price, it seems like an excellent choice.

I can only tell you what I would do.

I would ask myself...do I have enough ammunition, magazines, and spare parts as well as money for training/range time/hunting licenses/etc whatever for my current firearms, say...to last at least two years of unencumbered use?

If not, I'd get more of the above (particularly ammo) for the guns I already had.

But that is just me.

And why I don't have and am not shopping for a SCAR even though I want one.

Nearly.....But not quite. Considering the hassle HK has to go through to get these legally into the Country, they're down right cheap compared to this......

Yes I've weighed them and the reason I own both; one is an extremely accurate hole drilling maniac with superlative build quality throughout and hefty. The other is a lightweight, fairly accurate bush humper. At my age I do less bush humping than hole drilling, so my favorite is obvious.

Have you priced a KAC recently?

A guy at work was a class 3 dealer and had a real Mk17. Had the short barrel and happy switch. Awesome rifle. If you want one and can afford it, I'd say get it. They are awesome.

Emphasis added. Obviously, then, yes. It's a reputable rifle, it isn't excalibur, don't expect it to do your work as a shooter for you, but it will get the job done.

After reading this thread, I think you should not only get one, but use it to shoot holes in a pallet full of G36s and HK417s, just because I get sick and tired of hearing how Germanic mediocrity is allegedly superior to anything.

I handled one when they first came out. I think the design concept is great but the rifle seems cheap (frigging plastic). The price is ridiculous. So no, I would not buy one.

If you can afford the SCAR 17, get the HK. Otherwise, $200 less and buy yourself a Vepr 308 and a PTR 91.

And then you would have two rifles that are harder to mount optics on and aren't as flexible as the SCAR.
