So, I'm kinda stuck.

I have a relatively new to me 71 vintage Winny 94 in 30-30.
I wanted a lever action for the longest time and now I have one but I'm kinda getting into pistols too to boot.
Was surfing the net today when I ran across a guy who has one LNIB (M9) and is willing to trade for a lever action.

Winny Pros:
It's a lever action!
Been using it as a general purpose gun (hunting/car/home)
Wanted one for ages
Not being made like they used to

Cons:
I have lots of rifles already, many of which can be used for the same purpose(s)
Ammo is expensive (Wally world had it for 15.97 a box last I checked)
I don't do nearly as much hunting as I do fishing
Takes up more room (silly I know, but I live in an apartment and space is at a premium)

Steyr Pros:
Cool little pistol
Can be used for 2 out of 3 uses for the winny
Would diversify my collection (only have 1 pistol right now, a PA-63)
I'll be getting my CCW soon and it could make a decent carry pistol
Relatively cheap ammo

Cons:
Odd little sights
Availability of parts (?)
Not the biggest fan of composites (yet, I might be able to change, but for now I'm a big fan of wood and blue)
Not quite as versatile

Being in school, my finances force me to choose one or another; so sadly, I can't comply with 'just get both!'

Any input would be good.
Thanks in advance!

I was the first to vote.

I voted 'no'.

One should never trade a lever action rifle
for anything but a different lever action rifle
or to modify it to suit your needs.

I'm going to have my .30 cal lever chopped to a carbine.

I also voted no. I have heard, read and experinced nothing but bad things about the Steyr M9 pistol. I almost bought one when they first hit the market but a friend of mine bought one before me and let me shoot it. The sights are the worst I've ever used although I suppose you could get used to it over time and 10 round mags were all that were available at the time and might still be all that are available since last I heard Steyr discontiued them long ago.

No for me as well! Go to your local gun show (if you have any) and pick up something there as in a new/used wheel gun or what ever. :)

I also voted no. It sounds like you are going to regret trading away the lever action.

That being said, I had a Steyr M40 for a while. It was a COOL gun. The sights are absolutely a 'love em, or hate em' type of thing. I happened to love them.

Mine was 100%. I decided to go in a different direction with my firearms, unfortunately.

I do think that the Steyr is on the list of must haves.

I would trade you my LNIB FNP 9 or any wonder 9 for that rifle anyday. You really should keep the rifle. I just graduated so I know how tight $ can be. All in all I would suggest a little more shopping since yours is probably worth a lil more.

I understand the whole poor college thing, been there. I think in the long run you would regret a trade for the Winchester. Of course, I hate to give up any of guns.

I have rarely traded anything that I did not regret later, and some of it was crap. I would NEVER trade a shooter like your pre-cross-bolt safety 94. They had not switched to beechwood in 1970, so yours likely has a decent walnut stock. I have two--I don't know why. KEEP IT!

From my personal experience I found trading things makes me happy for the moment I get the new gun. I am all excited but when the "newness" runs out then I am left regretting my decision to trade.

I also am in school and money is an issue but i found it is much more beneficial to suffer through the waiting and saving and then buy the next new thing, keeping what I might have traded. In the end I think you will be much happier. How many stories do you hear about guys wishing they never traded or never sold that X. I hear much more regret than I do happiness.

Should I trade my Winchester 94 for a Steyr M9-A1

I voted yes but I know nothing about the Steyr, assuming it’s a quality gun then do it.

You sound like you're going the way of the majority gun owners nowadays and a 1971 md94 isn't something special and neither is a .30cal lever gun.

I'm with AKElroy. Every time I've traded or sold a gun, I've regretted it later. I'm not saying I'll never do it again, but it will have to be too good a deal to pass up.

Don't do it. You'll regret it one day. I know about things like that. If you really want the pistol, find a way to buy it, but don't let the lever go. Tuck it away and forget about it for a while.

Bad trade IMO

Having owned a model 94 of an older vintage, I'm forced to say no. Mine (post war vintage) finally wore out after 20 years of my Dad, and 30 years in my hands. That was one sweet brush gun that I plan to replace soon. Maybe real soon if Winchester extends the run on their limited model they had out recently.

And I can't see why they wouldn't. Winchester not making a model 94? Some people would say that's nearly sacrilege.

I voted no. First because it sounds like you like the model 94. Second because while most of what I have read about the Steyr has been positive I don't think they sell them here anymore. I would suggest you at least research how hard it is to get parts or accessories if you need them. I really think maybe you just ought to wait until finances allow another purchase.

They ain't making the '94 anymore,and prices are going up.Think ''collector's item''...and, you HAVE a PA-63...that's a pretty sweet little pseudo PPK,in 9mm Mak.Be happy.

I have a M9-A1 and it is one of the (if not the) sweetest shooting/handling polymers I have ever come across... extremely accurate, the sights are extremely fast, and I have a 15, 14, and 30 round mag for it. Though they are no longer being imported, Steyr is still servicing them if need be but their reputation is right up there with Glock as to durability and dependability... Personally I would make the trade without a second thought... post 64 Winchester 94's are nothing special and not at all difficult to find... the Steyrs on the other hand, are very difficult to come across now that they are not being imported.... I am personally not at all impressed with the 94's and actually prefer the 92's and Marlins to it.

I will only add that one should never trade a gun he/she likes as it will only lead to regret down the road.

I'll have to second the opinion of the M9. If I could find one I'd grab it in a second.

For me, I would simply ask myself which I would shoot more, the rifle or the pistol.

Wore out Holiday Rambler? Mine is 62 years old and in very good condition.

I still own every gun I ever bought. Starting with a .30WCF mod 94. I've had it for 50 years and I would only part with it if you stole it. Go ahead...Try it...

Its a "no" if it were me. I am partial to rifles though. As MarrTheHat said though,"I would simply ask myself which I would shoot more, the rifle or the pistol?" Also some other things to consider, which one am I more accustomed to shooting? Which one is the most useful to me? Does a pistol suit my needs? Finally, is there a way to possibly keep my rifle, and get a handgun that I am familiar with to fit that need?

Me, too.

Which is why I wrote this in post 2:
