Finished running these through my chronagraph at my favorite range in Piru, Ca. Temperature was a bomby 70 degrees and a very light breeze from left to right across the range. The loading was:

Bullet: 165 gr Sierra HPBT
Powder: H4831 SC
Primer: WLR
OAL: 3.300 Just off the lands.

57.0 grs: 2637--2645--2629--16.5-----6.7----5.4
58.0 grs: 2676--2697--2658--39.1----14.9---10.8
59.0 grs: 2728--2733--2725---8.3-----3.4----2.7
60.0 grs: 2774--2794--2752--41.9----16.2---12.6

These were three strings of 5 shots each averaged together. The target was at 200 yards and the best set of five was at 11:00 to 12:00 one and a quarter inch above the X ring. The Rifle, a Browning A Bolt, .30-06 with a Redfield 3 X 9 Compact set at 5. The rifle has not been sighted in using these rounds, but hits the X ring at 200 yards, using Sierra SPBT 165 grain bullets and 58.0 grains of H4831 SC and WLR primers. I believe with a little tuning of the scope and some adjustments of the rounds this could be one nice round for my rifle. Only problem to solve is what will it do when it hits the Game Animal. Other then that, it looks very promising.
 
are you using the game king or the match king? I have tried both on deer. sugesst the game king. the match king does not open up very well.
 
Thoughts from a 1970s Sierra Dealer

I was a scout master and attended a lot of gun shows selling my molds, grips and brass my scouts collected helping me teach my city hunter safety courses. For extra scout make work money I bought hundreds of pounds of Sierra machine setting up seconds which scouts sorted and bagged and we sold at gun shows in Southern California. Some customers informed us they won some serious matches and Sierra did not want to hear about it as they wanted to sell their first class bullets.
 
We had a thread at TFL one time about bullet behavior and a Sierra Rep chimed in with good info about the differences between flat based and boat tails, as well as comments about jacket thickness among the 150-, 165- and 180-grain bullets.

What I found with the 165 was that at close range and at around 2,850 to near 3,000 MV, it makes a horrendus exit wound. Out at 100 to 150 yards, I got full penetration and less of a bomb effect.

Great accuracy, small groups from all Sierra bullets I've used, from 100 to 500 yards. Just messing around at 500, I got two four-shot, four-inch groups from the 165 HPBTs...

Lennyjoe...The problem that I have been trying to solve is that The Sierra SPBT has been making a small hole in and a small hole out and the deer runs a bit of a distance. And I don't like running a deer to ground. I tried to slow the SPBT's down and that isn't working, same problem. I like the Sierra bullet and am going to stick with it if I can get one of them to open up in these small southern california sage brush eating deer. From what I am getting from that string you sent me to I may have it in the HPBT. But I don't NEED 2900fps. We are talking preformence at 300 yards or less. If I am going to shoot at under 100 yards I will break out my "Jack Handle". It performs very well using Speer 170gr FP at 2000fps using 32 grs of W-748, CCI-200 primed.

Speed, speed, speed...What for if it won't behave itself. Danged hot-rodders :neener:

Oh. BTW...H4831SC will push them at 2900+fps if I max it out, but why...???
 
Good info on the expansion problems with the soft point though. Might want to give the HPBT a try.

I have yet to put one thru a deer though. Maybe this year I will be lucky enough to complete that task.
