SIG P229 40 S&W

I love my new Sig Equinox...my question is, in .40 cal and given it has a 3.9" barrel, am I going to lose much muzzle velocity in choosing a 180gr bullet over a 165gr bullet...I have Gold Dot 165, Fed HST both 165 and 180...according to Dr Fackler, heavier is better but, according to the FBI, minimum of 12" penetration so....any body know>
