I have a P229 in .40 and an older P226 in 9mm with the formed (not machined) slide. The P229 clearly has a "beefier" slide with thicker steel. I understand that the P229 was designed for the .40 S&W cartridge and the slide was designed to be heavier, providing more mass to handle the recoil of this caliber better. The P229 slide is machined from a block of stainless steel.
Current model P226s have milled slides and are available in .40 and .357. You gotta watch out for that "alleged information" that hangs around on the internet and gun stores after it is out of date.
A friend had a P229 and found it reliable but hard to hit with. He traded it for a P220 and is much happier.
