Yes, it will stick out a bit and there will be a gap but they will work. The 18 round P229 SCT/Tactical magazines are actually made with the 15 round magazine bodies from the P226.
I have a long mag that says 226 that fits perfectly into my 229. The unfortunate fact is that it is a .40 cal mag and the pistol in 9 mm. It might be for sale.
