I was looking at getting a Sig. The only thing is I dont know very much about them. The models in question are the 229SAS; 229R; 226R all in 40cal. What are these firearms like and are they worth the bones for them.
Street:rolleyes:

I just recently bought my first Sig P229 in .40 and I've been very happy with it. As to the cost/value assessment, that's something that, really, only you can decide. Is it an excellent pistol? Absolutely. The most expensive I own, but also the finest.

I can't really tell you what it's like shooting a 229, I just did one day (loaner pistol) and after two magazines I knew (KNEW!) I had to have one. And this from a guy who's never even so much as LOOKED at an alloy framed pistol, much less a DA/SA. Having had a Beretta 96 in the past, I was convinced I didn't care for the snappiness of the .40 cartridge either. Somehow, none of that mattered after shooting the 229. It was luuuuv at first shot.

For more input I might suggest you stop by: http://www.sigforum.com/ ... More Sig knowledge than you can shake a stick at.

Any Sig model is good in my opinion, I've own many different ones, I would place my life in the hands of a Sig gun any day. Go to your nearest gun store pick out one that feels good in your hand and you will be happy with it. Sig offers a gun for whatever need you are looking for and its not hard to find one that meets all your demands. Yes they can be expensive but in my opinion they are worth every cent.

All of your picks are good, I've owned both the 229 and the 226 and loved them both. The 226 is rather large and bulky so I never made my carry gun, the 229 is a bit more compact and a little prettier, it fits my hand better. Is one better than the other? Some may think so but I put them on the same level. Personally if I could have a new one I'd pick the 229R

For an even better value, take a look around for CPO/demos/factory refurbs. They're pretty widely available for Sigs, usually retailing for $500-550 and just as good as new.

I missed out on what I thought was a used P226 (a mark on the barrel) which was really a factory refurb. $495!

I'd jump on this one if I wanted a .40S&W: http://www.summitgunbroker.com/1445244.html

Sigs are awesome

I can't speak for the 40's as I don"t like the 40S&W, no offense, but in 9mm I can say that the 229 is the finest mid sized gun ever made. mine has been flawless, and is so comfortable to shoot. It's easily concealable, holds 13 round of 9mm in the mag, and a sweet trigger in DA or SA.

i cant speak for the 40 either. i have carried a p226st in 9mm for 4 years with no malfunctions of any kind. you cannot go wrong with sig.

I have both the P229 SAS (.40 S&W) and the P226 Blackwater. I have yet to shoot the P226 (2 days old). But, I had purchased a Kimber Pro Tactical II and just couldn't get into it after shooting my P229. So, I sold it and bought the P226. I love the DAK trigger of the P229. The SAS designation is in reference to anti-snag. All the parts are honed and the slide edges are melted smooth. It is like holding a beauitful woman. I cannot recommend Sig firearms enough. I have owned Ruger, Walther, Kimber, Llama, Bersa. I have friends with HK's that I have shot. But nothing compares to the Sig.

My next gun: P220, After that: 556

Good Luck.

If you should ever be so lucky to find a P228, NIB or CPO, grab it. (Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) is a SIGARM reconditioning program of returned guns. They look new and have a red case instead of the blue case.) It is the only 9mm I would consider owning. It's the sweetest 9mm shooter I have ever fired. I hadn't had any experience with a SIG until my agency issued me the P228 years ago when it replaced the Beretta. It was love at first qualification. Since then, my agency replaced the P228 with the P229, but I still kept the P228. Both are fine handguns, but I still prefer the P228. Now...if you want a much more serious caliber, go for any P220 in .45 ACP. The P220 has gained near legendary status as one of the most accurate and reliable .45 ACP autoloaders right out of the box. SIG dropped the P245, a carry version of the P220, several years ago, but it recently came out with the P220 Carry. You'll pay more for a SIG than Glock, S&, or SA autoloaders and less for an H&K than a SIG, but you'll get what you pay for and expect in a quality handgun. I warn you about SIG handguns. It's kind of like peanuts. You can't have one and stop there. Right now, I am toying with the idea of a P239 in .357 SIG based on the rave reviews of a colleague. He claims it is the most accurate handgun at 25 yards he owns. I wish I hadn't heard that because I don't own anything that shoots .357 SIG.

I have the 226ST Stock 9mm and the 220ST .45ACP. Both are reliable, accurate and easy to clean. Two of my favorite guns. Are they worth the $? Yes IMHO. Are there great guns for less money? Sure, in fact I have a couple CZs, 75BD and P-01 which are as accurate and reliable.

Thanks for the thread Street Salvation, because I am really intersted in a Sig 229, or 239 in SAS with DAK trigger. That is until I read an artical about the Sig 220 SAO. I want the SAS for carry and 220 for whatever else. It seems like I have some saving up to do since I hear they are a very addictive line of pistols.

I have a P220,P226 9mm,P228(my first Sig :D )P229 .40 DAK,P239 .40, and a Trailside. The only "problem" with Sigs is that they are highly addictive. They are the crack cocaine of the gun world, so be careful of what you are about to get yourself into :uhoh: IMHO they are the best thing going. Rent several different ones before you decide on which one to get first. The 229 is smaller and easier to conceal then the 226. Make sure you try both sa/da and the dak triggers before deciding. Good luck

Yes, if you can afford it buy a Sig. Best out of the box combat pistol you can buy. I have a P220. I have shot a P229 in .40 and loved it.

I agree, Sig is a great gun. I purchased a used 226 and it has been reliable and accurate. A lot of fun to shoot as well. I also have the (no longer produced) Trailside and it is a terrific gun as well.

I will definately purchase another Sig at some point in the future.

SIG is always a good buy

One of my criteria for a great pistol is a good trigger pull, and SIG has (for me) the smoothest and best trigger pull of any DA/SA or DAO.

I had a SIG 229 and loved it but had to sell it many years ago when I was laid off. Last year I got around to buying another SIG. I found a used P245 while looking for a compact .45. Very nice. No other brand of pistol screams "engineered" to quite like a SIG.

I can't imagine anyone ever regretting buying a SIG. I like Glocks, 1911s and Hi-Powers, too. I would never turn down a chance to buy a SIG, though.

BTW, SIG did very extensive testing of the P229 before releasing it. As far as I have heard there have been virtually no complaints with it over the years.

They're quality firearms no doubt, but if they're the perfect fit for you, is up to you. I find walther and s&w handguns to shoot much more to my liking and will not buy another sig (and will actually get around to selling my 226 one day), ymmv.

WoW!

I was only gone for a day or two and 14 posts! WoW! Thanks people. I am leaning towards the 229SAS 40cal. Hey hifiguy7 can I get more reviews on yours? Do you carry? What holster? Have you changed anything? How do you like the trigger pull?-the reason is because I orig. was gonna get a SA/Da but now I am leaning towards this DaK for some reason. I was stuck on buying a HK USPC 40 but now I can buy a 229SAS for less then that so the HK might be my second now. How is the safety and slide relese location? And one last one, before i go to sigforums, can I get black wood grips? hehe Any ways thanks a bunch!!

The P229 SAS has no safety. It is the DAK trigger. You simply pull the trigger and the gun fires! The pull on the 229 SAS is a little long, but it is very smooth. I bought the gun to carry, but have not done so as of yet. I ordered a Kramer holster. But, it has not arrived yet. I like the 229 SAS so much that I am seriously contemplating a P220 SAS (45 ACP). The above posters are right, Sig firearms are like drugs. They are all I think and dream about. I have two children and a wife, but I can't remember their names. My time off of work is now my time at the range. I don't think I'll ever do yard work again.

I'm sick, please help me.....

True..

I have not shot the gun, and I should have known that it does not have a safety. In my area there is not a very good gun shop for sum distance so I settle for reviews and learn to like it. I really don't know if I will like a long trigger pull or not Something I guess I could change later. Now I am waiting on sigforums to let me in! Thanks

I was stuck on buying a HK USPC 40 but now I can buy a 229SAS for less then that so the HK might be my second now.
Do yourself a favor. Before you plunk down $800-$950 on a gun you plan to carry, take the time and make the effort to shoot them both. I have an HK USP compact.40s&w and a Sig 229.40s&w and IMO they have a totally different feel as to how they shoot. I like the Sigs better, but thats not to say that you would. If you have the money to spend on a Sig or an HK, don't choose the cheaper one, choose the one that fits you best.

I understand...

I totally agree with the idea of shooting them both before I buy. The only one I will be able to shoot is the USPC 40 because I know someone with it. Another friend has a sig in 45 but not the 229. Since this will be my first handgun that I own, I do not really know what I like, meaning I am not adverse in the ways of the Gun.lol I have shot a couple to notice that I did not like the ones I previously shot, but I could learn to like them. I am in no real hurry but I am getting bored. I have spen the last 4mo looking at handguns and finding the ones I like (cal; size, barrel; features; reviews) but none of the stores around here has them and they say the only way to get them is if I buy it. Aahhh. I would Like to get one by the summer but If I have to wait longer I guess I will. This site has loads of info thanks to all of you. Man I wish there was some kinda of virtual shooter so I could try all of them. Now that would be a joke.

I understand you are looking for a carry auto and in 40 caliber. Just a suggestion, but you might drop down to the 9mm P239. Sigs are tanks, well built and heavy. Maybe you want to lighten the load a bit for conceal carry. By the way, I never owned a Sig or cared much for them until I was looking for another maker and picked up a Sig P229. I was sold immediately on the feel alone. I bought it and have set it up for upcoming USPSA competition. Good luck.

Thanks Shooter

Thanks for the advice on the 239 but I am wanting the 40 cal and when I carry it, it will most likely be not that much. I am using it more so to get accurate with mostly car and carry sometimes. The reason why i was gonna get the USP is when I get out of the service, I was gonna go back to MN and become a deputy and it would be my duty. I think I will still get the USP just after this one. The 229 will not be my only handgun, just my first. So with that in mind, I think it would be ok, with all the good reviews, to have a sig to start my collection. **Oh Shooter, take the prize at USPSA!
