SKS Misfiring / Steel Case Question

Ok, I have two questions for you brilliant people out there.

1) I've heard that steel cased ammo is more likely to rip off your extractor, or just break it in some form or another. The SKS is the same way? What causes this, specifically?

2) My Wolf ammo misfires all the time, but I don't have problems with old milsurp stuff. Maybe is it because of a striker spring weakness? Not exactly sure, but unfortunately I need to stick with Wolf as it's the only company that produces steel free projectiles. So, I'm looking for a solution as opposed to a different selection of ammo. I guess the misfires are bareable, about 1/10 misfire, but it's really annoying. Thanks.

Steel cased ammo uses pretty soft steel, as such the wear on the extractor is not really as bad as some make it out to be. The SKS was designed for steel cased ammo; shooting steel cased ammunition should not be a problem. The theory behind there being wear on the extractor is in that steel is harder than brass, so in turn the extractor is worn down at a faster rate. I have never heard of an extractor being torn off the bolt due to steel cased ammo. All Combloc weapons should not have a problem shooting steel cased ammunition.

It sounds like you are getting light strikes from the firing pin. On the rounds that misfire, are there dents on the primers?

Not in particular. Yes, there are dents. But they appear to be sufficient in setting the primer off in terms of firing pin depth. When my 8mm rounds misfired, it seemed as if the firing pin tapped the primer, but with these misfires, there is a deeper indent and it is still misfiring. I'm not exactly sure what to do really. I might just install one (striker spring) for the hell of it and see if my misfires come to a halt.

Has the problem occured with multiple lots of ammo or are they all the same?

If it is multiple lots then I would suspect a weak hammer spring or even just a gunked up trigger group.

The Wolf ammo has rather hard mil-spec primers and requires a pretty hefty whack of the hammer to set it off.

you have to keep in mind that the sks and ak's were made around steel case ammo and has been shooting it through god only knows how many all over the world, for a long long time. they were made for steel case ammo, when those guns came out the countries that made them and made the ammo, didn't do brass cased ammo, steel was all they had.

Steel case Wolf shouldn't be a problem---I've put about 5000 rounds through one of my SKSs, almost all of it Wolf. Works fine in my others as well, and in my buddies AK.

Same goes for misfires. The combloc guns shouldn't have any problems touching off the Wolf...Sounds like a weak spring to me.

You've got a Yugo M59/66 correct?

It sounds as if you're leaking from the gas system. I've had to replace the gas valve on two of my 7 SKS's because they didn't eject. When the gas system leaks it acts as a bolt action.

Check Ebay, you can get a new, improved, slightly oversized gas valve for $20, it was some of the best money I've spent getting all my SKS's to sing in tune LOL. I just picked up a slew of parts there for cheap, including a bolt and bolt carrier so I have spare parts to swap out at the range if something goes amiss. Click the link and see.

Why would a leaking gas system have anything to do with misfires?

I've dissassembled and cleaned my bolt twice, only running 1,000 rounds through it, the firing pin is Scott free.
