I know this is a vague question so keep the smart a@# responses away please. I am thinking of buying a SKS soon before the surplus market is dried up. I know from other threads that a good yugo goes for about $200. An old friend of mine happens to be the origional owner of a Chinese SKS bought new 13 years ago. I saw it when it was new in the paper, box, and cosmaline. He only paid $100 for it then. I am sure he has put only a couple of hundred of rounds thru it and it has been well kept. If I offer him the money to buy it what is a fair offer? I don't want to screw him and I also don't want to get screwed. I am not sure of the cal. It is good condition and has been cleaned as needed.
Thanks for the input.

All SKSes are 7.62x39.

FMV of a Chicom SKS in the condition you describe is around $200, at least in SE Pennsylvania.

One advantage of the Chicom SKS is that it has a chrome plated bore, while the Yugo SKS does not. Chrome plating is advantageous when shooting corrosive ammo, and in humid environments.

I deal in guns on a regular basis here in the Atlanta, GA area. I agree with Dave's assessment. If the gun is in top notch shape, it's worth around the price of the Yugo and based on my previous experience, may be more accurate. Mine certainly is more accurate than my Yugo. Wholesale on the Chinese SKS would be about $125.00 to $150.00 in this area.

200 bucks is about right. I had a Chinese SKS that I bought for $140,sold for $200,and then saw the same ones at the gun show yesterday for $240+. Yugos in the cosmoline were $150-175. Two years ago Yugos were about 80 bucks...

Electrode, are you able to discern between pinned barrel and threaded barrel Chinese SKS rifles? The threaded are higher quality manufacture. A pinned barrel will have a definite gap, or space between the barrel and the rear sight assembly. The threaded barrel will have a flat milled into it in the area where the barrel threads into the receiver.

The threaded rifle is more desirable than the pinned. Not that pinned guns aren't valuable in their own right, it's just if given a choice, pick the threaded barrel. BTW, "threaded" barrel does NOT refer to the muzzle area of the barrel!

I also would say $200 or so. Being an old friend, he may object to charging you double what he paid - regardless of market condition. Depends how close you guys are, and how much of a deal shark he may be.

I bought a Chinese Norinco back then. I wouldn't sell it for a penny less than one meelllleeeoonn dollars. I love it. The ammo is under $200 per case, the maintenance is nothing, and it's accurate for at it's range. It's accuracy and knock down drop alot beyond 150M is the limit I have found. 7.62 is not a sniping round, so that shouldn't be a surprise. It is what it is. Cheap, reliable, and rugged.

I wish I had held onto my Chinese SKSs. One was a "D" or paratrooper model with 16" bbl. that took AK magazines, and the other was a regular 18" model with bayo. I am angry as hell that I let them go. I did keep one Russian Tula in 99% shape with reddish laminated furniture. This one is a tack driver.

$200 would be fair to both of you for the rifle you describe.

Yep, 200 bucks is a nice, fair price. I really like chinese SKS's although I don't own one. The one I shot side by side with my yugo was right on the same level in accuraccy, but it had the advantage of being easily fired offhand as well as from the bench. The yugo is a wonderful rifle, but it's a handful.

Heck, save up a little more, snoop around, be patient, and get yourself a Russian. I've got 2 and I got both of them for $250 each.
If you can find one, consider the Yugo SKS M59 (doesn't have the grenade launcher.)

Of all the SKS I have shot.....

the Chinese are the best shooters......200 is a fair price. Make sure there is not corrosion in the gas tube/piston.....chris3

Can't go wrong for $200 on a Chinese. From what I have seen they are all creaping up right now. The Yugos because they are drying up, the others I guess from possible fear over another AWB ban.
