Sling swivels

I want to put a sling on my wood-stocked 10/22. I've seen 3 point slings mounted on AR-15s, it seems they only atach it at the end of the stock. However, my 870's sling is atached once on the stock and once on the forend. I can't really shoot it with the sling on, but that could probably change if I adjusted it. So, does one method have any advantage over the other, and could both methods be done on a wood stock?
