I recently purchased a used SxS shotgun in 20 gauge for a great price. It doesn't appear to be cylinder bore but I'm not sure how tightly it's choked. As a general rule is it safe to shoot slugs out of a SxS? Whats the best way for me to determine if I can use slugs in this gun?

The only thing you should be concerned about is how well the barrels are regulated. Will they shoot to the same point of impact.? There should be no problem with slugs at all. If it has choke tubes then you should put more open tubes in place as full chokes might be too stressed on the threads and may blow out the end of the barrel.

The big prob is not the chokes, it's the fact that few doubles shoot both barrels to the same zip code.

Forster style "Rifled Slugs" will shoot safely, so bench test and see if you can find a brand that puts them into the same group. Failing that, find a slug that shoots well in one barrel and just use slugs in that one.

HTH....

+ 1 to Mr. McCracken's words...

My Stoeger Coach Gun is accurate with slugs in only one barrel (the IC-choked one). I practice shooting & reloading slugs with that one while keeping the other (Modified Choked) barrel stoked with buckshot for close-up threats.... :D

Amazing what slugs do to watermellons at 50yds....and buckshot does to them at 10yds....

Bernadelli offers double shotguns with sights and regulation for slugs. About $3000.
I once saw a pre WW II Walther double with folding leaf rear sight for slugs, and my 1939 Stoegers Shooter's Bible reprint said they were regulated for Brennekes.
(I sure miss that book, anybody know where I can get another?)
