snubbie for CCW... hammer or no hammer?

what if you are wounded or unable to fire your DAonly handgun because of illness.

I'm trying to imagine a physical limitation that would prevent me from pulling a DA trigger but that would allow me to cock it and fire SA........

DAO+Hammerless

I have a b/s S/W Mod 36 my father carried on the job and Stainless Mod 60 that I carried. Both were neutered as a department policy, even for off duty back in the day when we could only carry revolvers. In any case, I have both pistols, still carry them (although I wish one was the lighter 642) as an alternative to my SIG 220 .45 and both still have the hammer even though they will fire only in DAO. I may sell the Mod 60 and purchase a 642 and a keep the model 36 (fathers back up gun). Alternatively, I could have a smith take the spur off the hammer of the Mod 60 but that seems like a waste of money.

Bottom line, never present your pistol unless you intend to do something with it. Cocking it defies logic for CCW. ANd, if you present your pistol to someone in a "situation", you better be the first to call the Police and file a report before he does, even if he flees. Someone will report you as a Man with a Gun, better to be that guy first who calls the Police.

Just keep it concealed, non presented if you can help it otherwise, all the other drama mentioned in previous responses will come down on you. Good luck and be hammerless/DAO.

S&W 642 hammerless. I reasoned that, God forbid, if I ever have to use it there probably will be little time just to draw, much less cock a hammer. So this is mainly how I practice. Even with my full sized Taurus 66, I very rarely cock the hammer. When I first started shooting, I used to fire SA all the time. After a while, I've noticed that cocking the hammer does surprisingly little to improve my accuracy at distances under 15 yards.

I can swing a hammer like John Henry

All the DAO stuff sounds odd to me. Perhaps its because I've shot SA revolvers since 2nd or 3rd grade. My first cap and ball revolver was purchased in a Walgreens store back when they also sold reloading supplies. Yep I'm getting older. Dad used to tell me SA was for when you wanted to hit, DA was for noise. I learned SA and shoot it well (read that as: my holes touch). I often stand at the firing line next to DAO auto shooters whose brass groups better than their lead. Once in a while a DA revolver guy shows up and tries to match the clatter of the autos. All shooting dinner plate groups at 10 yards.

If those guys got into a real gunfight, their motor skills suffering the adrenilin rush and opening up those large groups by 4 or 5 times, I can understand the 80% miss rate of 20 foot or less battles. Boy, talk about over-penetration...

Open my SA groups up by 5 times, and I'm shooting dinner plate groups in stress. I'll win.

Fast? Yes. In my experience accurate DA has no speed advantage over accurate SA.

The SP101 in my waist band has a hammer. Contrary to my rant, I usually shoot it DA and group as well as SA with it.

Snag? I draw from IWB with my thumb on the hammer. My thumb prevents any clothing from snagging the hammer.

Accidental discharge letting the hammer down? Its a possibility. But less likely than a DA miss.

Learn to use a hammer. Its a great tool.
