Somebody just tried jumping in my truck....

This is why I keep the windows in my vehicle tinted as dark as the law allows and always keep my doors locked.

People are less likely to think they can get the drop on you if they can't tell where you're looking.

Pepper spray. Right in his face. Give you enough time to back right past him (or blow the light if no obstructions).
Have one in every car. It can make a difference.

When I was a 17 or so I was cutting through a bad part of our county. At a stop sign a guy jumped on the back of my motorcycle to "take him for a ride"!

He got a ride....right up to about 80...clawing the whole time to stay on...then a hard stop to 0 and his face in the back of my helmet...then a hard start where said "rider" involuntarily left the back of the bike and was observed laying in the street in my mirrors.

Bet he does not do that again.

Back to car jacking. Client of mine was carjacked in broad daylight on one of the biggest streets in down town richmond va. Said youth one leaned against his passenger window at a light. He looked right to see what as going on. Youth 2 popped open his drivers door and dragged client out at gunpoint and said "run".

So he ran.

Car was found 2 days later less than 100 feet from the pickup point with approximately the mileage to NYC and back on it and a couple of new rap cd's that the client hadn't owned before.

Driving a truck in Calgary Alberta once I was parked at a red light and all of a sudden the passenger side door flew open and this guy grabs my swamper and starts to beat on him. Turns out some rocks and mud had flew off the truck and took out this guys windsheild. I made my boos buy mud flaps after that.

Let me guess, around Jeff Davis south of Chippenham?

There's nothing I can add to what's been said about pulling up at intersections except keep your eyes moving. I ride motorcycles and bicycles and if there is one thing you do not want, it's to be hit by someone in a car who "didn't see you". Keep checking those rearview mirrors and around the car.

That happened to me once and almost happened a second time.

First time was about 5 years ago. The guy hopped in and mumbled something about how if I knew what was good for me I'd listen to him and just drive. My response was a 6 1/2" Model 27 that I just happened to have with me. I cocked it, his eyes about popped out of his head, he went clawing for the door handle and upon opening it literally fell out of the truck (85 Ford lifted 6" on 35's) and started running.

After that I learned the lesson about locking my doors, but keeping the windows up wasn't an option. No A/C sucks.

Most recent event was about a month ago. Pulled into a stop and rob to get something to drink. Got back in my truck (locking the door as soon as I got in) cracked the window, then leaned over to roll the passengers side window down (have A/C now, but it was a nice night).

As soon as I leaned over I heard someone grab my door handle. I had an SP101 appendix crossdraw, cleared leather and looked back at him while still leaned across the console.

His first response was to put his hands where i could see them and jokingly say with a goofy grin, "Hey, bro- don't shoot me." (he didn't realize I was armed since i was leaning over the gun)

As I sat up light glared off of the stainless and it looked like he about soiled himself :D

Funny thing is I had a bad feeling about that guy as I walked in. Not any of the others he was hanging out with, just him. Made sure to keep an eye on him. Strange how stuff like that goes down.

D94R- Just to be clear.... I was not proposing that anyone shoot anyone in this instance....

Just presenting a gun ends the debate more times than not

I understood you fully, and I wasn't advocating that I would have shot. My post was more of a caveat of your post, as you presented a theoretic scenario, which in my case, happened.

Like I said, hindsight is 20/20. Can't change the history of the event, only theorize what might or could have happened had the variables been different (gun or no gun, his reaction to a gun, possible greater sense of perceived threat being on high alert when carrying etc)

If someone tries to open my car door, they have automatically earned a .38 pointed to their face and I don't care what their excuse is. I almost always lock my doors upon entering my car, but there are times I forget when I am in a rush. I also like to roll down my windows in the summer. When stopped at a light, I try to keep an eye on my mirrors and sides. Always be alert. Even when I exit the house, I look up and down the street to see if there are any suspicious cars or people around. You never know when someone decides to stalk you for no good reason.

D94R- yeah, just making sure you, and anyone else, understands where I'm at with it...

I think your real life example happens more than most would give credit for... and this is why I think a dangerous move like peeling out into traffic and endangering others is FAR less desirable than just presenting a gun to protect yourself if needed...

Well my choice would be to run over him. Vehicular crimes carry less punishment. Just don't run over anyone else and him more than twice.

He wouldn't try that in TX. Our castle law applies to our cars. No CCL required.

Same here in Georgia. I love the Castle Doctrine.

Colorado too. Legal to carry a loaded handgun in your vehicle at all times, with no permit. For repelling boarders.

Glad it worked out ok. Luckily my doors automatically lock once the car starts moving. I also keep OC pepper spray handy. I am a whole lot more willing to pepper spray someone if something doesn't feel right that may not be a justifyable shooting. They are also a lot less likely to report it as well.

Castle doctrine actually also applies to cars in Florida as well. No permit needed for a loaded handgun in the car, although it must be "securely encased" - basically a zippered case of even just a snap-top holster will do (as long as that holster isn't on your person, because then you need a permit for that).

If the guy really, really wanted your vehicle, he'd have had it.

Screwdrivers aren't normally considered weapons, but they are.

I hope you like the taste of it, 'cause if you use it on somebody in the passenger seat of your car, or standing at your window, you're going to be eating quite a bit of it yourself.

Thats why they invented pepper foam.
