OK - So I ordered a 3" SP101 earlier this week. I pick it up next week Friday. Here is a nice pic borrowed from another forum:

Question - this 'stock' finish doesn't look the same as the finish on my stainless GP100. My GP100 looks like raw stainless whereas this SP101 looks sorta matte or ghost/bead blasted. Do y'all suppose that the SP101 will take to a DHart polish job well?

Additionally - I'm gonna try something ballsy.......
Hey - to you folks, it may not seem like much, but I am so proud/happy to own a now-discontinued KGPF-330 3" short shroud GP100! The revolver feels so natural in my hand and has perfect aesthetic looks! I love it.

Soooooooo.......I wanna turn the SP101 into a Li'l Bro to the GP100. My intentions are to turn the full shroud SP101 into a short-shroud sibling like the GP100. I'll accomplish this by carefully carefully carefully removing the underlug portion with a dremel. Then do some fine tuning and polishing.
It oughtta be purty and 1-of-a-kind SP.

Whaddaya think??

I think it'll look nice. Like you, I've become fond of the shortened underlug. Just take you sweet time and make sure it comes out right, and it will look great.

Your main problem will be replicating that finish, moreso than the dremeling.

Gary, I'm in the middle of exactly that project, although I'm having a gunsmith do the work for me. Actually the work is done but I took it back to him last week to clean up some things. Overall it looks pretty good, but he cut the lug back farther and rounded it more than I wanted. I wish now I'd showed him a picture instead of trying to describe what I wanted. The bead blasted finish came out great. Good luck with your project.

Scott

Gary, while the bead blasted matte finish can look sort of "cool", it's really a very poor finish for a revolver as it shows every scuff and ding quite noticibly and the only way to clean that up is to re-bead blast the gun. I've got two or three stainless revos with matte finishes on them and they're not guns I like to use much for that reason.

With a stainless gun which you've given a brush-polish finish to, any finish blems that might occur tend not to be very noticible and if they become so, it's easy to just sand or polish them right out again... much more practical for a gun that will see some good use... no bead blast finishes on guns I like to give much of any "work" to...
