Hello!

First of all I want to give my congratulations for this wonderfull forum.

My name is Edgar and I´m from Spain. I love firearms and I have guns to hunt and to target shot.

My question is:

The next summer I want to go to Boston to learn English and I dont know if I can go to a gun range and rent a gun to shoot there.

Is this posible? There are in Boston (or near) any gunshop with gun range?
Can I buy a firearms or I need a license?I´m older than 18 years
Thanks for all and sorry for my bad English

Unless you are a citizen you cannot buy guns (I think). And if you were Massachusetts is one of the few states that requires you to get a special license to own guns. But, you could probably go to a gun range and rent some guns to shoot, or mabye somone here could bring you shooting. Its still not very hard to go shooting here, but its much easier in other states.

Welcome to The High Road, Edgar from Spain.

Just to get the discussion started, I'll say that under U.S. Federal law, a legal resident alien can buy a hunting license and then possess a handgun. Silly, in my opinion.

One of the Massachusetts guys can fill you in regarding MA state laws and gun stores/ranges.

TC

Thanks for your answers!

Is not sure ,maybe I will go to other place to learn English. I was reading the Texas gun law and I saw that is the most permissive.

Wich of this States are the most permissives (with guns)?

California
New York
Delaware
Utah

Thansk for all again:rolleyes:

Utah is probably your best bet

Utah is a western, not very populated, state. Firearms freedom kind of favors low population density. I'm from California and renting firearms at public ranges is pretty common. You don't have to be a citizen, but they probably won't rent to you if you have a felony record.

Edgar,

Boston itself has very few opportunities to shoot. There are a number of clubs around Boston where you could shoot, but you would need your own gun, or somebody to bring you there , so you could use your host's guns.

If you are willing to drive, Smith & Wesson has a facility about 90 minutes from Boston, where you could rent pretty much anything in the S&W product line to use on S&W's shooting range.

I believe that you could buy guns in the US if you are a resident alien, but not if you are on a temporary visa.

Have you considered a nice southern city? The accents from Savannah and Charleston are divine.

I would recommend, with the others, that you go to NH to shoot instead. Of all the states you could have mentioned, MA is one of the most hostile to gun owners in the entire country. If you want a good comparison, think of, well...your next-door neighbor, France. The laws are every bit as restrictive as theirs, where civilians are converned.

Vermont and Alaska are your best bets. Of those you listed, Utah is your best bet. Very firearms friendly, and plenty of BLM land to shoot at. Very nice people there too. Texas is also pretty good. If you come to Austin, let us know. There are several of us who will take you shooting and you won't even have to rent.

I'd suggest that you choose your school based on the actual quality of education and quality of life. Having a non-permanent visa, you won't be able to buy a gun anyway, so overall gun liberties might not be the best factor to base your decision on.

Boston is a pretty cool city, I'd strongly consider that one for study if I were you. Don't want to wander too far off topic here, so feel free to PM me if you want any opinions on American cities.

Whatever city you end up in, feel free to post here with a title like "Anyone in Boston want to take a Spaniard shooting?", and there's probably someone willing to take you on their next range trip.

Bienvenidos al High Road, espero que aqui podeis encontrar todo la informacion que busqueis. Aqui hay gente amable, y las respuestas a todos vuestros preguntas.

Yes, very cool city. The population is disarmed, and the criminals are heavily armed. Places like Jamaica Plain are literal freefire zones, with the night's soothing sounds of 9mm pops to accompany your dinner, should you choose to wander there. In the areas near Chinatown, you can be offered crack on streetcorners in broad daylight. Convenient! Oh, and if you're from out of state, forget about even having pepper spray. It's a felony. Not that that stops criminals. Even in Cambridge, home of the most leftist places of study. Lots of predatory criminals in the MBTA subways. But don't worry..they might get one of the other sheep, not you. Maybe. They know everyone is unarmed, so they take their pick.

Why, you might even end up like the woman who was not only killed, but had her corpse doused with gasoline and set afire in Franklin Park last year!

How festive! Yes, what a _wonderful_ city. :barf:

(BTW, don't look for this in the local papers. They don't even REPORT the shootings and assaults anymore, it seems.) :scrutiny:

there are a few right outside of boston

check out
www.bostongunrange.com

I've shot there a few times when I lived in Rhode Island. If you are south of Boston, closer to providence, check out American Firearms School. They have a nice indoor range and a large selection of rental guns. The staff is very friendly and helpful also.

But why would you go to Boston to learn English? They speak a horrible dialect up there in beantown. Ha ha hahah Just kidding (well, sort of):D

If you want a cool city to study in.

Take a look at Providence. Although it is small, it is a very young city, with a good night life. Also, ther are no fewer than 7 colleges and universities in a few square miles. It's a very cool place to be a student and is quite afordable and easy to manage.

Bienvenido Edgar! You are more than welcome in Texas if you don't mind the heat. It's very easy to get around and there is a lot to do here (besides all of the shooting that you can handle). Here is some information on beautiful Fort Worth where I live:

www.fortworth.com
http://www.fortworth.worldweb.com/

And if you come to Fort Worth, no need to rent the guns. We have a huge variety for you to try out. Y también hablamos español para que te sientas en casa!

I couldn´t imagine so many answers!

We go step by step;) :

Utah is a western, not very populated, state. Firearms freedom kind of favors low population density. I'm from California and renting firearms at public ranges is pretty common. You don't have to be a citizen, but they probably won't rent to you if you have a felony record.

California is one of the places that i want to go, the problem is the cost of the fly ticket. From Madrid (Spain) to Califonia is 1,191.59 USD.

Have you considered a nice southern city? The accents from Savannah and Charleston are divine.

Yes I´m looking for the best place to learn english (accent) and to shoot:rolleyes:

I would recommend, with the others, that you go to NH to shoot instead. Of all the states you could have mentioned, MA is one of the most hostile to gun owners in the entire country. If you want a good comparison, think of, well...your next-door neighbor, France. The laws are every bit as restrictive as theirs, where civilians are converned.

Yes France is more permissive than Spain but in France if you want to shoot you need a license and there isn´t public range shooting

If you come to Austin, let us know. There are several of us who will take you shooting and you won't even have to rent.

Thank you very much you are so kind

MatthewVanitas,Manedwolf,DogBonz and GhostRider66 thanks too!

Now I´m looking for a international school with framework agreement with Spain. Last summer I was in Australia (Brisbane) but the Australian people dont have so much guns, maybe the same like in Spain:(

I´m watching your reloading bench....It´s amazing! In Spain we only can have 2 KG (35 Oz) and 100 primmers in our house...and we only can buy 1.000 bullets in the year...

Spain is not a guns paradise, but we have paella:banghead:

Thanks !

Don't base your decision on where you can shoot. Decide which program is best for you.

If you choose Boston, you can drive up to NH in less than an hour.

Welcome to the forum, Edgar. I'm curious - why did you pick OttovonBismarck for a screenname?

Thanks! I´m studing P SCI. in Spain and I think Otto Von Bismarck was a very good politic in his time. Otto Von Bismarck and Julius Cesar were the two best politics in the Ancient. Our president (Zapatero) is a stupid and incompetent person...:fire:

As another thought, Washington State (NOT DC) is very nice. In Seattle, we have the University of Washington, which is a top-notch facility, and our gun laws are very good, with a few exceptions, and much better than those in Boston.

Avoid New Jersey at all cost.

:D

Don't forget the sidrerias (cider houses). Nothing better than hanging out in a stone cellar with bunch of lit Asturians, chewing on fresh bread and venison sausage, drinking 6% alcohol apple juice by the liter. Cruzcampo beer isn't so hot, but y'all's apple juice makes up for it.

Here's a though, can our boy go to CMP matches near whatever state he's in?

A lot of CMP matches will let novices borrow an M1 Garand and compete in the match for $10-15 (that's what, about E$5 these days?). So long as you have basic gun handling skills, you should be able to have a lot of fun with that.

Just another option. So long as you go somewhere other than a Euro-style East Coast socialist bastion, there should be shooting matches around. If the West Coast is too pricey, consider the Northeast (not during winter) or the Carolinas, Georgia, etc. Texas is always good too, though you might not get much English practice in *grin*.

Thanks for all and sorry for my bad English

Nao tem que desculpar. Your English is far better than many of the Americans on this board.

:D :D :D Of course! cider houses are very funny because you paid a little bit of money and you can drink every cider taht you want!Or you can...

In Spain all people thinks that the best places to learn English are:

Boston
Los Angeles
New York
San Francisco
Delaware
And Florida if you only have basics notions of English.

Regards!

Unless you are a citizen you cannot buy guns

Nope, as long as your a legal imigrant (temporary or permanant) you can buy a gun, just need to fulfill any state requirements for background check, i.d., etc. Don't go to Boston, go somewhere like texas or utah where you can experience a freedom loving society, something that Spain unfortunatly doesn't imbrace.

Boston
Los Angeles
New York
San Francisco
Delaware
And Florida if you only have basics notions of English.

Boston: interesting city, some funny accent

Los Angeles: 5% American Dream, 95% suburban sprawl

New York: the few native-born Americans in New York have (according to the cliche) horrendously weird accents, and the rest of the city arrived in America less that six weeks ago.

San Francisco: really cool city to visit, one of the better cities to visit in America. Lots of interesting things to do, outstanding food, beautiful scenery. Standard US accent. Very kooky local politics, heavy socialism/statism, etc. There should be gun competitions not too far away from the city, and shooting ranges (within 45min drive), just there won't be any semi-auto M16/AK47 variants.

Florida: no arguments with your impression. I do love Cuban sandwiches.

Delaware: I've lived in America my entire life, and I have ZERO impressions as to whatever might happen to be in Delaware. I literally could tell you far more things about Tajikistan that about Delaware, even though I've actually been through Delaware. I'm amazed Spaniards have even heard of the place, much less recommend it. (now MV gets flamed by the two DE THR members.

Bring a bottle of sidra with you as a gift for your host family, dorm-mates, or whatever Americans you'll be introducing yourself to.

Definitely check out the CMP matches though, shooting an M1 Garand is a quintessential American experience.

Busque una escuela, no una ciudad. Hay muchos colegios excelentes en comunidades más pequeñas.
Look for a school, not a city. There are a lot of excellent colleges in smaller communities.
