I notice we always have a very large number of guests perusing this site.
I wonder who these people are, what they are looking for, and what lead them to THR.
It also makes me a little nervous, as I can see specific posts being pulled OUT of context and pasted on blogs, or what have you to show "what gun owners are really like"

Are we potentially feeding the enemy ammo without any reguard?
THR is VERY clean compared to most forums but words can be misunderstood.
I think too many times I see something like "I would have blown him away"

I'm not suggesting we hide are true feelins on subjects, but what damage could we be possibly be doing to ourselfs?

Lastly, how do we get these guest's to create an account and jump into the mosh pit with us?

All guests reading this, this is your oppertunity to create an account and tells us why you are here!
Particularly those who DON'T agree with the genral position here at THR.
Come on! Jump in! Sometimes our debates dry out fast because we are not actually debating with someone of a different position.
Hop on board, tell us whats up, ask questions and post comments. Keep it High Road but don't leave anything out. Us at THR are always looking for new challenges!!!:D

Dude, it's a public forum. People can be expected to browse through here without making accounts, we're probably the largest and as you mentioned, cleanest firearms forum out there. We've got some of the best information out there, so it makes perfect sense for the casual Googler to find something of interest here.

probably some of them are spies, but I imagine most are firearm enthusiasts that read often - post never.

Also, sometimes THR threads get linked to from other forums, like Glocktalk, Arfcom, and others. So that probably accounts for a chunk of it.

No spies -- it's a public forum. Guests are welcome. Anyone can join as a member as long as they're polite and obey the forum rules.

Heck, there are times when I forget to log in after clearing out all my cookies and I wander around as a guest.

The most important thing to remember is this: don't write anything here that you would be ashamed to say out loud in front of your family. Do that and all will be well.

Google bots parse all the posts on this site. So chances are some of the visitors you're seeing are search engine bots.

Don't look too much into the title of the thread. Its more a light hearted joke.
As has been stated you can't really "spie" on a public forum. Just a keyword vaguely related to generate interest....jeeesh!

When I first joined I needed pictures of the weapons I owned. I had just purchased my CCW permit and two handguns so I was tapped out. I am a single parent and full time college guy Graduating next yr! :) So when I couldn't afford a camera I came here to ask for help and was supprised at all the guys willing to help a broke fella out, got some really cool pics too. Liked it so much I became a member and stayed. I would bet alot of college students use this forum for debates and papers. I used it to make a web page for computer class.

I'd say the majority of these guests are folks who have found The High Road through the search engines - I'd love to see one day's worth of stats for THR. :)

It's not so strange, there are many boards I read but don't post on. I read THR on and off 2 or so years before registering.

Anything you say or don't say can and will be mutilated into a different meaning and used against you in the court of the Internet.
Fixed it for you.

We aren't having a private conversation on your back porch with our buddies. It's as though someone picked up our back porch and transported us and to a brightly lit stage. That someone is Oleg, the guests are the audience. I think some of them do come join us, after a while. They are not spies. They are the curious.

Welcome, spies!

Note when I joined. Note my low post count. And I *seldom* bother to log in when I come to read what people have to say, just as I browsed here as a guest for maybe 18 months before I thought I had something to say interesting enough to warrant registering.

I'd bet that's the case for a lot of people. Welcome them, and keep according to the spirit of the "High Road", and all will be fine.

+1

I found the site while I was looking for information on a handgun for my dad, a Yahoo search brought this site up as a result on the first page. I joined after about 2 months of lurking as a guest when I actually needed to ask a question about a rifle that I couldn't find anywhere else.

Guests lurking here is much better than them lurking at a place like arfcom, so I wouldn't worry much about it.

Dang, I was really hoping there were some gun grabbers lurking in the shadows creating a D-day list of tactics against us. :D

But it would be nice to have some plain old antis hop on and try to talk some sense into us....

I happened upon this site when considering a firearms purchase & trying to get more information on different pistols I was considering. Like M38 shooter above I didn't join until I wanted to ask a question. I am also guilty of reading more than I post. Sometimes because someone else has already posted what I would have & I see no point in wasting the space sometimes because I really don't know & I feel that when I have nothing to say(contribute) the smartest thing to do is keep my mouth shut. I do really enjoy this forum though-I visit this one more than any other.

Some people just stop by to read & as long as they can without joining they wont until they have a question.
