Anyone ever extracted a case and see its split inside the size die? I stuck a nickel 223 case that i know i lubed. When i pulled it out of the die it had a hole blown out on the side close to the area where it would usually fail. It literally looked as if something punctured it.

I have found a split come out of the sizing die, but more often than not, I find/make most of them when expanding. Had 3 today in 45acp all while expanding.

Where was the split? On the neck or the body?

Was the hole "blown in the side" there before you resized it?

Was the cartridge a Reload? If so, what powder was used, what charge and what bullet weight?

There are way too many questions to ask before opining about the condition of the brass, your reloading procedures and how the brass was loaded before it was shot to provide you any kind of definitive answer.

• The example on the Left is a classic case of a pressure failure. The failure mode of cylindrical objects when subjected to too much or repeated pressure is always a split along the longitudinal axis. You will see the same failure mode with frozen water pipes.

• The example on the Right is a classic case of work hardening. The case shown has simply been belled and then roll crimped too many times. The back-and-forth cold working of the case mouth finally resulted in a fracture. (You may have broken a coat hanger by repeated bending. It's the exact same thing, simply a different material.) Ways to prevent this are: 1) annealing the case mouth, and 2) minimizing the flair and crimp distances.

I have resized split cases before but I usually catch them before they make it to the resizing die. I've only ever stuck maybe 2 cases so I have never had a split case get stuck. Would like to see a picture of the hole in your stuck case.
