Several years ago, when I lived in Las Vegas, one of the sporting goods stores on West Sahara was acquired by Sports Authority.

After several months, I noticed that their entire handgun counter was marked down for "clearance" sale.

By the end of the month, that display counter held only knives and optics.

Today (Oct 26, 2006), as I wrapped up my due dilligence in shopping for my birthday present, I stepped into a store (near Kietzke and Virginia) that had until last year been called Gart Sports, and which now flies the Sports Authority flag.

The whole handgun counter is marked down.

They are discontinuing sales of handguns by the end of the calendar year.

For those of you living in Northern/Western Nevada there will, briefly, be some good handgun bargains at the Sports Authority.

You're too late for the 4-inch S&W 586+1 in blue & walnut -- I got one, and a fellow I work with got the other. Marked down 26% to only $10 more than the Taurus m66 at a store down the street. Hmmm. Let me think. S&W classic 7-shot .357 in blue and walnut for $10 more than the Taurus 7-shot in stainless and rubber.

I'm thinking, I'm thinking . . . okay, I guess; sure; fine; if you insist.

The prices will continue to drop, kind of like a reverse auction. The PX4 is already gone. All the Ruger Mk IIIs are gone. They still have some Glocks and Brownings. And a nice Uberti .44 mag SA.

I imagine the last thing to go will be one of the .50s in the bottom of the left-hand case.

For those whose heart pauses inappropriately whenever we lose another sidearm store, take courage: Sportsman's Warehouse (just down the road at Moana & 395) is picking up the slack with better prices and more variety.

Interesting.

I lived in New Jersey several years ago. When Sports Authority popped on the scene, they were the only large retailer to offer handguns. I can't remember the year, it had to be around 98 or 99. I had stopped in to check out the handguns and the sales jockey told me that Sports Authority was doing away with all handguns in their stores. Everything was supposedly being sent to Alaska where it was flying off the shelves.

I guess maybe at the time that was just something they were doing in the North East and/or in the process of doing across all their stores.
