Back in June I sent Ted Yost my Milspec to be upgraded. I got a little bored and that's dangerous. I picked up a GI and decided I would try a little metal work at home.

The result are VERY mild upgrades to a Springfield GI. I posted some initial picks a while ago. It's done now.

What I did:
Ed Brown slide stop
Ed Brown extractor
Ed Brown firing pin and stop
Fitted a new MSH
EMC wide spur hammer slightly bobbed so it won't bite me
Real steel thumb safety
Kings bushing (I really like how it protects the barrel crown)
Kings #104 front sight
Yost retro rear sight
Greider medium length trigger
VZ canvas grips
Thin grip screws and bushings
Wolff Spring Kit
Wilsons sear spring

I was only able to shoot at 50' today, but it's dead on and 100% reliable after 500 rounds.

Here are some pics. The Catapillar machines in the background are for scale. It really is that big.

I really had fun with this. I know it's mild and not involved, but I'm pleased with the results.

Wow, that is one large gun. Good thing Germany only had the railroad gun and not this beast!
:)

Looks great, well done.

cheers, js

I rather like that thumb safety. It's "sharper" shelf makes it seem like it might be more "grippy" than the stock GI safety. Is it?

I ask because the safety on my GI is both small and stiff, meaning I miss disengaging the safety on that pistol sometimes when drawing. (No problem on the Kimber, which has an extended safety). I like the GI look, so I might be interested in this safety.

The safety is off my older Milspec. The one the GI came with was MIM. The older Milspec used fewer MIM parts. Whe I had the Milspec built up by Ted Yost, I got the take off parts back and a few have gone into the GI.

My Yost is definately the slicker pistol, and it's the jewel of my pistols, but I'm pretty proud of the GI. It works and still looks traditional (well except for the grips).
