Been waiting on an XDS but as of late have checked out the XDM 45 3.8 compact...seems like quite a bit more gun for pretty much the same amount of money...not all that much difference in size either...Shot one(XDM) the other day and it was pretty impressive...Can anyone who owns one add any insight on this ?

The XDs is slightly smaller, that's its real benefit. Luckily, going down to the XDs doesn't present the problems that scaling down another line incurs. The XDs has the same features as the XDm.

Personally, I'd stick with the XDm, because like you said - it holds more rounds and isn't much bigger.

I wouldn't personally consider the XDs to be just /slightly/ smaller.

From the side it looks similar, but the XDs is obviously much SLIMMER than the XDm.

I'd say the XDs is much more of a pocket-sized autoloader, while the XDM compact is a... well, a compact autoloader.

I'm 5'10" 190-195 pounds depending on my workout cycle and I carry an XDm Compact (40) in a Galco Avenger Outside the Waistband holster and it conceals well under an untucked t-shirt. I have handled and fired the XDS and it is a good bit slimmer and would conceal more easily but has less capacity than the XDm 45 Compact. This is one of those situations where a holster store with real guns (rendered inert but properly weighted) would come in handy. That way you could try the two side by side and see which conceals/carries better for you. But then you would still need to move to the range to see which one you shoot best.

I haven't fired an XDm Compact in 45 but have fired the XDS and found it uncomfortable to fire more than about 10 rounds. By contrast, I can shoot a Sig 220 (45) all day. Sure the Sig is bigger and heavier, I'm just saying from a practical standpoint I wouldn't enjoy practicing with the XDS.

On another note, I'm perfectly comfortable with 165 or 180 grain projectiles so the XDm Compact in 40 works fine for me on days I carry striker fired. This weekend it's been DA/SA hammer fired so far.

The XDM 45 compact is a great gun. I can easily put 100 rounds through it at the range without getting tired & with the right belt, holster, and untucked tshirt, it conceals easy IWB. It is pretty accurate and hasn't malfunctioned once, even while running federal champion ammo. Unless you are looking for something a tad bit smaller, or just different, I'd go with the XDM over the XDS. Or start with the XDM and buy the XDS later and have both.

Many things to consider - but a big consideration is

How many rounds do you like to have in your gun.

XDs = 5 - XDm = either 9 or 13 rounds. very similar in size

Many people have the same decision to make between the

M&P 9c = 12 rounds & the Shield - 7 rounds - very similar in size

So how many rounds do you like to have in your gun.

Handled an XDs today. First impression was...YIKES...there's nothing to hold on to!
