SR22

In my (not so) humble opinion,,,
There's not a lot of bad about the pistol?

It has SA/DA action with exposed hammer and a de-cocker,,,
As far as I'm concerned that's the ideal mechanism.

I use this pistol when I take newbies to the range,,,
It's features make for easy training on many aspects of gun handling.

Not the least of is how to manually lower a hammer to un-cock a pistol,,,
Even though it has a de-cocker I teach how to manually do it,,,
I think that's an important skill to have as a shooter.

Basically, after you learn how to shoot with this pistol,,,
Your knowledge will transfer to just about any type of semi-auto.

Mine is capable of more accuracy than my old eyes can use,,,
A sharp-shooter friend of mine hits a 2" spinner every shot at 25 yards.

The dang thing doesn't seem to know how to jam up,,,
I've had a few fail to fire but with the DA action,,,
I just pull the trigger again if that happens.

It even has a small rail to mount a light or laser onto,,,
For late evening pest control that's a plus.

So I think the dang thing is a very fine handgun to own,,,
And now that they have issued the longer 4.5" barrel option it's an even better target gun.

Unless someone was only interested in formal range/target shooting,,,
If I were going to buy someone their first duty style handgun,,,
This would be at the top of my list of candidates.

That's my opinion on this gun.

For what purpose?

IMO, the "mark" series of pistols is far superior in the 22lr category, unless size and weight is of concern.

If you want a .22 pistol that mimics similar sized poly framed centerfire handguns, I think they're pretty nice. I got a buddy that has one and he loves his as well. I've shot it a few times, and while it's certainly a nice gun it doesn't do anything I need that my Mark I or Buckmark can't do better.

But it's not really fair to compare the 2 as they are completely different guns. If you want a reliable compact .22, the SR22 is great. If you want a full sized, the M&P22 are also great. If you want target-like accuracy and a crisp trigger, the Mark series, Buckmark, or Victory are great.

I love my little SR22. Certainly one of my favorite plinkers. When I find something bad or ugly I'll post about it. Until then...

I've got 6000+ through mine. Only reason I don't have more is I picked up a Beretta M9-22 and it fits my hands better. That being said I still enjoy putting a couple boxes through the SR22 now and afain.

The SR22 is one of a couple of guns my wife insist on taking each time to the range.

Easy to break down for cleaning. About 5 seconds and you have the slide off and springs removed.

I shot my friends a while back, and bought one as soon as I could. It's a great little shooter. Everyone in my circle who shoots it, wants one.

I have a Mark 1 and Mark 2 as well. The SR-22 goes to the range more often lately.

Mine is about 4 years old. Have had no problem through a couple thousand rounds. My wife likes it better than anything else I own

I have Two of these.
They both work with all kinds of ammunition
just as Aarond said in his post.

What do you guys think of the backwards safety?

You don't really a manual safety on a DA/SA unless you want to carry Condition 1, which is impractical here since it's backwards from so many other pistols.

As a less serious pistol, I think I could probably ignore the safety. But I don't like it.

I think the safety is a pretty bad goof on Ruger, but everybody who has one seems to love it, so it must not be that big of a deal.

I think if I had an SR22 the safety would be somewhat of an annoyance and distraction as most of my guns are 1911s. My regular .22 plinker is a Beretta Model 70S which has a thumb safety that works the same way as a 1911 does (up for Safe, down for Fire). Might also have something to do with Ruger having it on the frame instead of on the slide. If it was mounted on the slide then I would probably be better with it there as then it would be more like a S&W Model 469, Walther PPKs, or SIG Trailside, all of which I have owned and I'm familiar with.

I can't say enough good things about my Ruger SR22. I still own a Mark 2 Target, but comparing the two is like apples and oranges. The little SR22 is used for a suppressor host and is just about perfect for that role. It's shorter barrel makes for a better balanced gun when a suppressor is attached. And the the fact that it literally eats any ammo I put in the mags is just icing on the cake.

The only down side to the SR22 is the backwards safety. Had to buy a second one so I could get to shoot mine :) The kids pretty much confiscated it.

Of the guns that I have with an external safety, it is running about 50-50 on up vs down as safe. I carry Glock and 1911 so not a real big issue for me since it only affects "range" play.

That, and Condition-One carry isn't possible on a gun who's safety also functions as a decocker any time it's engaged.

I've had mine for at least 3 years. Its a lot of fun, the kids like it, and the wife learned to shoot a handgun with it. I cannot find anything bad to say about it. I cannot remember one FTF or FTE. I feed it everything. I like CCI, but it does not care. About the only thing is that I've noticed recently they are cheaper new today than they were when I bought mine, but that's the way it goes I guess. I think there is a glut of new firearms floating around right now. The safety really does not bother me.

I have a MKII, a Ruger Single Six, A Browning Buckmark, a S&W K-22; but the one that I find that I'm shooting the most is my Ruger SR-22, such a fun pistol to shoot.

I bought one a few years ago for my kids (I shoot it too and enjoy it). It would not function out of the box; bad mag safety. I returned to Ruger and they repaired and returned to me in about two or three weeks. It has functioned great since and is reliable with every ammo I recall shooting in it.

As a slightly off-topic post, but I always bring up the Ruger SR22 when all the rifle snobs start talking crap about how they don't like CZ rifles because their safeties travel backward. But as several of these SR22 threads show, there are hundreds of people who love and don't mind the SR22 despite it's backward safety. Just funny how the same aspect can be viewed different depending on the brand.

I'm more of a rifle and shotgun guy..

Only 2 sidearms I own are my CCW semi and a revolver I hunt with..

If I buy another handgun, it will be the SR22. No doubt.

Rented one at the range and ran about 300 through it. No failures
and very accurate for that size frame. 25 yards all day long.
That's the longest you can shoot in the indoor range I go to.

I really like that gun a lot.
