Bought a stainless Ruger 10/22 and want a scope for it.

There are some silver scopes out there, but more choices in black.

Would it be goofy looking or a fashion faux pas to put a black scope on a stainless rifle?

Who cares about fashion if you can keep them all in the X-ring?

Seriously, my Remington 700 VSSF (stainless) wears a matte black Leupold. Looks okay to me, and nobody has ever said otherwise. If you like the black scope, go for it!

I tend to buy stainless/synthetic rifles for the weather resistant properties, although I prefer subdued rifles for hunting. I have had two stainless/synthetic rifles with matte black scopes. The Ruger stainless was so bright that I covered the stainless parts (including the rings) in camo tape to hunt, and whle I was at it, I taped the stock as well, but not the scope.

Functionality over appearance is my preference.

This rifle will be used only for target and plinking, so camo is not a real issue for me.

I personally think the matte black/stainless contrast looks pretty good. Especially if your Ruger has the black synthetic stock.

My stainless Tikka T3 wears a black Zeiss---and the silver rings that came with the gun.

If you have a stainless/plastic gun--you didn't buy it for looks in the first place---so who cares???

If you want looks---go buy a Dakota or some other custom wood stocked rifle.

I've always thought that most silver aluminum scopes don't match the steel rifles anyway. Sometimes there is a big difference in the color. For that reason I think a black scope looks better than a silver one.

I'm also a habitual rifle painter. Any stainless big game rifle of mine with a synthetic stock would be painted black.

My stainless 10/22 has a gloss black Leupold on it that is now Krylon flat black. On it I just couldn't paint the GM barrel so it's all still silver.

my 10/22 stainless is not black synthetic.

It is a wood stock and stainless version of the Deluxe model. I understand this combo is made special for Wal-Mart. It also has a slightly longer barrel than the regular rifle.

You will not see it on the Ruger website, but it looks just like the 10/22DSP, except in stainless steel.

wood stock + ss barrel + black scope??

wood stock + ss barrel + black scope??

I would do it just like that although your taste may be different.

I would buy a matte Weaver T09-M base, matte standard Weaver rings and the best matte black scope you can afford. I like my Leupold 3x9 Compact with Adj. objective but it's not being produced anymore.

You should look for a scope that has the parallax adjusted for the shorter rimfire distances (50 yards) or an adjustable objective.

If you want to see how your rifle looks with the silver scope I would try to find a suitable silver scope at a local shop and lay it next to your rifle.

Good luck

I have a wood stock, stainless rifle, black scope combo. I bought it used for a great price and it looks ok to me. I just got stainless, synthetic rifle and a great deal on a Schmidt and Bender scope, which doesn't come in silver. I think both rifles look just fine.

you guys talked me into it.

I just ordered a black Bushnell Scopechief 6-20x40 from natchezss.com

I like the matching look myself, but I wouldn't have a problem using a black scope. I'd probably keep the stainless rings, though.

I have a black Bushnell 4x32 Sporster mounted on my Stainless Steel Marlin Model 60....

One of the "good old boys" I shoot with Wednesday mornings sauntered over and said " ...that's a nice little scope - looks dainty...."

I'm shopping for a bigger scope :)

if it bugs you too much, spraypaint the rifle black :)

seriously, high temp header paint works well.

make sure you degrease everything well first. and dont paint the bolt or the inside of the receiver :banghead:

I have a friend that owns a Stainless rifle with synthetic stock and has stainless rings while having a black scope. Looks surprisingly good. I have a same gun makeup and stainless rings and stainless scope. It looks just as good. And yes, I do know for a fact that there are far less market for the stainless scopes out there.

Stainless is cool stuff. As long as it has been blued or painted. All of my stainless stuf is blued. It's just to shiney for hunting. But to answer your question. Black scopes are the way to go. Other wise you'd have to blue them too.;)

here is a stainless handgun with black optics:
