I'm trying to find info on a Star 22 I have. I know Star is a low end Spanish gun, but this one is highly factory engraved. It is nickle plated with around 90% engraving. It is hand cut, not roll pressed. I have only been able to find one pic of a gun like it. I would like to know when and how many were made.

The Star firearm company shut down a good number of years ago. Your gun was likely made in the 1960's when both Llama and Star produced upscale guns for the US market. I have no idea where to get factory record information.
I think Bob's gun shop got many of the parts so he might know where to find information. I think he is in KS and has a web site

Some more details are needed: the model number (usually just a single letter stamped on the bottom of the grip frame), barrel length, and squared off or rounded barrel. There's a two digit date code on the right side of the frame that you can cross reference online. I never understood why manufacturers couldn't just stamp the date on the gun, but they did what they did.

I had a factory chromed and engraved Star Model F for a while. Very cool gun. Bought it for next to nothing from a dealer who mistook it for a cheap potmetal throwdown.

Check out star-firearms.com for information related to production dates. Also Bob's Gun Shop in Royal, Arkansas (gun-parts.com), has parts for Star pistols.

The STAR pistol is not---NOT !!!---a " low end Spanish gun ". STAR made world class pistols equal to most of the best and better than a hell of a lot of others
ALL, and I do mean ALL, of my STAR pstols from 22LR, 380, 9MM P , 9MM LARGO shoot superbly with nary a problem. The STAR SUPER models in particular are of a world class design that supercedes the COLT.

What Will Terry said.

Star was a first rate gun company and it's closing was a loss to the international shooting community. They made darn fine guns; a lot of the "1911s" you see in movies are actually Star 9mms, by the way.

Thank you for saying that. I think Star is one of the most underrated and unappreciated makes out there. I'll put my MOD 30MI up against any 9MM out there; it was only $235, I think. It's been my first and only 9MM and will probably stay that way. I haven't yet found another that's as well-behaved, as dependable or as easy-shooting, and I've shot at least two dozen other 9MMs since I've owned the Star. You don't even need to compress the recoil spring to take it down or re-assemble and the firing pin drops down out of the way unless the trigger is pulled, 2 very cool features.

A "low end" gun with hand-cut, factory engraving??? That seems self-contradictory somehow.

There is a Spanish pistol forum here:www.gunboards.com. Click on "forum" and scroll down about 2/3 and you will find it. The moderator is very knowledgable and helpful.

Star, Astra, Llama.
In that order, the three very best of the Spanish handgun manufacturers.
