I love the sound of lead hitting steel. When I am shooting recreationally, and just having fun, it is my go to target. The cost of a quality target is kind of a bummer, but I definitely think it is worth it. I find when teaching a new shooter, it is a valuable thing to have because they get instant feedback via the *ding* and know if they are doing all of the fundamentals correctly.
What do my fellow THR members think when it comes to shooting steel?
What is your favorite kind of steel target? (Static steel, popper, swinger, ect..)

If you want to hear some steel ringing, check out this short clip of me enjoying a sunny afternoon here in wonderful KS. (P.S. It's not as flat as you all think ;))

I love to shoot steel too, and have all kinds hanging out there from railroad plates which they used to spike the rails to to bigger and heavier plates. Some are only for 22 and they ring nicely and others are double thick plates welded together which hardly ring at all and are for big bore so that you have to observe the impact.

No waiting no walking and instant feedback. If it didn't go ding you done missed it son. Big bore requires ear protection of course. I really have steel of all sizes and weights from 2" x 4' up to about 12" x 18". Distances vary a great deal also from 30 feet for 22 rf to 200 yards for big bore. I like steel the most for 22 rf rifle because I do not use hearing protection and shoot offhand like hunting and can hear the ding nicely.

Be sure you know the safety implications of shooting on steel targets, and be sure any steel you shoot is of proper hardness and construction, in good shape, properly oriented and at safe distances...

Amen to what Fred said. When a plate gets dimpled you cannot predict the ricochets accurately. Too close is dangerous.
