I just picked up a Stevens 62 22lr used for $40. She needed a good cleaning and oiling. Mounted a 30mm red dot for rabid squirrels of course. Wondering if you can give me any info on it? Read they were made in Canada but don't know how many were made. Seems like there not a lot of options for mags and even the stock ones arent that cheap. Is the bolt suppose to stay back? It won't after last round is fired and mag is sloppy in slot. Hopefully some one can help :) thanks!

Don't worry someone with knowledge will be along soon.

Photos might help.

You might also try posting that question over at Rimfire Central.

About all I know about them is that they were made in Canada, primarily for the Canadian market. The few you see here are marked "Imported." Magazines for the US made Model 60, 64, and 642 fit the Model 62, and are easier to find; I'm not sure what other parts are interchangeable, or whether one is metric and one is inch?

I suggest that you view youtube for dis-assembly and cleaning. There is a well done (amateur) video in three parts. Simply type in Savage 64 and go through the list of video clips.

I've had a great time with my Stevens 62. Its a tack driver and great fun to shoot!

Frank N. Stein:

I suggest mount a decent scope in Millett rings and mounts. I bought an "as new" Simmons 8 Point 3X - 9X scope on eBay for $35.00. Shoot for groups at 25 yards with variety of ammo. You should be getting quarter-sized (25 cents) sized jagged holes at this distance with the plain barrel.

My Stevens 62 functions flawlessly with all brands but produces BEST consistent accuracy with FEDERAL hollow tip hunting ammo.

The heavy barrel will not heat up as quickly.

The heavy barrel is more rigid with less vibration.

Whether or not the extra money for heavy barrel will pay for itself in increased accuracy is subject to debate. The heavy barrel has same rifling as original barrel. In my opinion, Savage produces TOP rifling which compares favorably to ANY factory made rifle of our planet.

You made a very good deal with your purchase. Typically, these used rifles sell for twice this amount.

Good shooting to you.
