STG-2000 Optics (What? That's an AK!)

I'm getting a STG-2000 in 7.62x39 in a couple of weeks. I was really hoping to mount a nice scope on it, something russian, and found the POSP. But now my dilemma is this: Is a 8x42 scope more useful on a x39 than the 4x, or 6x? Unfotunately a variable zoom scope would cost as much as the rifle itself, even more maybe. Is it better to have the wider field of view, and sacrifice magnification if your rifle cant really hold that accuracy anyway? I expect the STG to be very accurate though... Chrome-lined Steyr cold hammer forged barrels can't be all that bad, and I hardly face conditions that'd blow a x39 all over at 200yds here in Florida. Oh and by the way, this gun was bought as a semi auto 200-300 yard AR-15 killa. I shot the AR and hated it. That's why I got an AK for match, it was one of these kinds of things, you know?

Man it's gonna be funny to see the look on these guys' faces. Some of 'em will be alright though, I think... I shot with John Malloy once, you may've heard of him (he wrote a shooting book), and he was using a scoped 30-30 (marlin 336?) at 200yds. Awesome guy.

I'd pass on the STG. It's a 3 MOA WASR-10 with nonstandard furniture, stock, gas tube, front sight, and flash hider threads. No standard handguard, buttstock, Ultimak rail, brake etc. will fit on it.

If you want a cheap match AK, get a 5.45 model and put an Ultimak on it with a cheap red dot.

As to the question, a 4x scope is all you need on an AK, or any rifle chambered for an intermediate-power cartridge. Of course, the 8x42 WILL likely have brighter optics, given the smaller 4x scopes.

STG is no WASR and is a damn good value for its features. Have you considered a scout scope?

They can be mounted in place of the rear sight and can be had for $200-$250.

I have the 8x, its nice but I kinda wish I had gotten the 4x instead. Its really big.

I have 4x on my .223 Saiga and it works just fine. The 8x is overkill on an intermediat round.

Those guys have scout scope mounts that replace the rear sight. Cool thing is, the mount itself functions as an iron sight, so if your scope breaks you're not SOL.

EDIT: I have not done business with that company, I've only seen the website; you might want to see how other's experiences with them went first.

I disagree as to it's poor quality; an austrian made bbl, like an m16 a1 pencil bbl, with a1 flash hider, then tapco trigger assy, and other american made parts. I like the furniture myself, The rifle is made in the Cugir plant in romania, and then brought here to america, where they add all the after u.s. parts compliant stuff.
I am deff going to get one of these, I bet the bbl alone gets it down to 2 moa with open sites.

optics and quality

The STG-2000 is a WASR, but it has been converted by IO, NOT Century and by all accounts, IO does a lot better work. And the 5.56 chambered models have a very good reputation for accuracy.

WASR's can be very good shooters. It's the sloppy work that tends to cause problems with them.

As to optics: If they are for slow fire work out to 300 yards, you will be better served by a 4x PSOP IMHO. For action type shooting, a Kobra or other red dot would be better.

Or, just get a low mount and put a 3x9 Nikon with BDR reticle on her.

Here's a Belerus low mount on my Saiga 308:

These put the scope directly over the bore axis - the PSOP's are off to the left and many people have a hard time with that... plus, they are kinda high too.

With 7.62x39 a 1X scope is probably more practical than a magnified optic. If you must have magnification, get the lowest power available. The eye relief and exit pupil will likely be more usable.
