I live in a remote area at the end of a dead end road and get a few unwanted visitors, some just lost and need help but some up to no good. I,ve answered the door armed on several ocasions but never had any real problem. Last night late my truck alarm went off,it won,t do so unless the door is opened. I grabed my spotlight and pistol, opened the door a crack and sweped the yard with the light yelling I,ve called the police. No answer,my lab ,which stays in with us at night was growling with his hairs up, so I let him out to investigate. My husky who is only a pup I caught to keep in,then I realized she was the culprit, she got my keys with the wireless alarm and was chewing on them. Was a big relief.Having the dogs inside and being armed is a comfort where we live. I think I,ll add more security,a fence and put the keys in a safer spot.I,m also working on getting my cc permit. There is no such thing as being over prepared.

You are your best protector anywhere. In the country, at least where I grew up, even the LEO agencies recognized that. Police are stretched pretty thin and cannot be sending out a squad car everytime somebody's car alarm goes off.

There have been many threads here about the appropriate response to things such as yours. I think you handled it correctly with the spot-light and all.

You do have to be very careful about leaving your home even to deal with your vehicle as the various legalities of self defense start to change as the number of choices that you have to deal with it increase. Likewise the legalities change as what you are protecting moves from human life, down through pets and livestock, and then to material property.

The laws makes distinctions between somebody hitting you with a crowbar (assault) vs your vehicle (vandalism)...between somebody pouring paint on your house (vandalism) vs pouring gasoline (arson). Etc, etc, etc.

Years ago, I had a domestic dispute going on in the hallway right outside my apartment, It got real ugly and my wife was worried about the gal out there. I grabbed my gun but stayed out of it not seeing any physical violence, no weapons...not even pushing or shoving...just yelling. I kept my eye on the episode through my peep hole. Then the scum-bag said he was going to come back and burn the building down!!! I called 911 immediately and the police came and found the gal with a fat lip (that I hadn't seen through my peep hole) and off he went in handcuffs. My wife heard him make the arson threat and after I called 911, I told her if he came up on our floor, the third, with a can of gas, I was going out there and scare him off or shoot him. I was scared to death on several levels but I kept my head...I guess. As it was, I never left my apartment. That was the closest I have ever come...and with luck the closest I ever come.

Be careful out there.

I live in the country on a few acres, with no close neighbors. We have two outside dogs that bark at everything. You learn to 'read' their barking. You can tell the difference between them barking at deer, possums, squirrels, coyotes, porcupines, distant dogs, etc...and from somthing that I need to get up and investigate. Having a gun and a spot light is great. I've never had to chase anyone off the property....but you never can play it too safe. Best to be prepared.

By the way...get yourself a good key hook to hang those keys on. :D

Pretty funny about your keys. I own a husky and when she was a pup she got into a lot of trouble chewing on stuff (Chewed up my good boots and range glasses to name a few). Be prepared for more antics as you go throught the "growing pains" but they will eventually grow out of it. As for my husky doesn't bark but howls. It's loud enough to wake me up if something funny is goind down. The only time I have heard her growl is during the Huricanes down here in FL. Some idiot ran out of gas on my street next to my house. He knocked on the door, the power was out, to let me know his car was parked outside of my house. Needless to say I had my 45 at my side when I answered thru the door. You never know what crazies are at your doorstep.
