A friend asked me if I could make up some .280 Rem. for him and I told him no but I would help him make some on my equipment and told him all he needs are dies for the .280 Rem. as I have everything else needed. He ,being a thrifty sort, asked if we could use other 7mm dies that I already own and I immediately answered no and went on to explain about cartridge shape, size, shoulder angles, etc. Later I got to thinking about it and began wondering why wouldn't a person be able to neck size only the .280 Rem. cartridge with a 7mm-08 neck size die or 7mm Rem.Mag. FL die. I realize care would have to be taken not to go too deeply because the neck of the .280 Rem. is longer than the neck of either of the others. I also realize dies are relatively inexpensive and this is not an ideal fix but my question is :Is it possible and if not why not? Inquiring minds want to know. Thanks.

It's theoretically possible with the 7mm rem mag dies, but probably not with the 7mm-08. the 08 is a shorter case and the dies may not be long enough to accomodate the 284 case. I would think that making sure the cases were centered in the 7mm rem mag dies would be a big pain during resizing and bullet seating would almost certainly be iffy at best. As you said, given the price of dies, why not just buy the proper ones?
