Depends on the trigger on the SW99. The .40 SW99 compact I owned had the AS trigger which I could never get used to (basically a DA/2 stage SA/SA trigger).

SW99-45ACP-AS has three trigger positions. There is a long travel SA (which I believe constitutes the anti stress nomenclature). Convention DA when the decocker is applied which transitions to SA after firing the first shot is fired.

The ambidextrous magazine release levers can prove to be problematic. Hand position is important. With the wrong hand position one may inadvertently actuate the magazine lever to the point of a partial magazine release.

It has some nice features such as interchangeable back straps, concave circular dish rear face of slide to see or feel if the strike is in the cocked position and loaded chamber indicator (extractor positioning). The sights are adequate with interchangeable front sights to adjust elevation point of impact.

The magazine springs on the first examples were changed to preclude failure of the magazine follower to actuate the slide lock after firing of the last round. S&W replaces the magazine springs (redesigned) under warranty should this occur.

A limited selection of holsters and magazine pouches are available.

At some point The SW-45ACP may be become a collectors item since this was the least produced caliber of the SW99 series.

Shooting impressions service grade side arm acceptable accuracy at 7yds – 25yds & 50yds.

I like mine to the point of investing in a Milt Sparks holster and magazine for CCW application.

The MP series was not available when I acquired my SW99. I have no plans on purchasing a MP-45ACP. That said the MP is the flag ship of the S&W pistol line. Thus state of the art with a developing after market parts “Cottage Industry”.

I've never held or fired a SW99 but I own a full size M&P 45 and to me it is a great gun. Mine has the no safety option which I like because I don't like fooling around with one. The trigger pull is similar to a Glock and a trigger stop eliminates any over travel. The three different back straps are a plus for all hand sizes. You can switch the magazine release for left or right handed shooters. Accessories aren't everywhere but there are plenty of options. Night sight are available for it and it is seriously accurate. I love mine and would never sell or trade it for anything!:D

I picked the M&P because my carry/range gun is a M&P 9C and I have found no other weapon that is easier to shoot accurately and quickly than the M&Ps. I have guns that are more mechanically accurate but I can always shoot better and more quickly with my M&P. My wife's full size M&P is like cheating. Shooting well is SOOOOO easy with it.

I have shot both the S&W99 and M&P in 45 ACP. The 99's trigger is nicer (traditional DA/SA or DA while the M&P is more like the Glock DAO) and I do prefer it's unique ambidextrous mag release. The potential minus is that the S&W99 was originally the Walther P99 in 9mm later beefed up to 40 S&W and then re-engineered for the 45 ACP. The S&W M&P45 was designed rom the ground up as a 45 ACP pistol. That being said you could not go wrong with either one. A plus for the S&W99 is that cureently CDNN has 45 ACP mags for ca $20 - a real bargain.

I have tried very hard to like the S&W M/P, and thus far I have failed. I don't care for the feel of it in my hand, for whatever reason, and I don't seem to shoot it particularly well, which may have something to do with the trigger. I do think that the P99 is one of the finest handguns on the market, at any price, and the SW99 is a good example of it if you want to get one in .45 ACP (the original Walther version is only available in 9mm and .40 S&W). I also think that the AS trigger configuration is a godsend, but it's clearly not for everyone; no handgun yet made, in fact, is a one-size-fits-all proposition.
