Howdy
I have tons of single action revolvers. Mostly Colts and Rugers, but I still have an Uberti Cattleman I bought used probably close to 20 years ago. This one is chambered for 45 Colt, and it has always served me well. I used it as one of my CAS revolvers before I found my second Colt.
Previous to that I had another Uberti Cattleman which was the worst revolver I have ever owned. It had a bunch of problems, not the least of which was the barrel was not screwed in properly and the front sight leaned to one side. It also had the worst trigger pull of any revolver I have ever owned, it felt like it had sand inside the action. I got rid of that one and used the proceeds towards a Ruger Vaquero. So when this one popped up I was leery of going with another Uberti, but it has served me quite well.
The new Cattlemen with the retractable firing pin are not all that new, I had a chance to fire a couple at least two years ago. One seemed fine, the other did have a problem. It belonged to a lady at my club, and she was having trouble with it failing to fire. She asked me to try it and I blasted away with five rounds rapid fire like I always do in CAS, and there was no problem. Then the lady tried it again and she kept getting failures to fire. The best we could figure was she was pulling the trigger very, very gently, and sometimes the hammer would fall and a round would not go off. I tried her method, very gently squeezing the trigger until the hammer fell, and sure enough, I had some failures to fire. I suspected there was a burr somewhere in the hammer mechanism preventing the firing pin from fully extending when she squeezed the trigger very slowly. It was not my revolver so I could not take it apart to try and determine the problem. She said she was going to return it and either get a refund, or get a new revolver.
I have not heard from her since to find out what the outcome was, but there was most definitely a problem. Not an internet rumor, straight from the horse's mouth.
