Took my yearly Winter War ride down to the range yesterday. The snow was minimal, thankfully, but the cold air sapped my strength and by the end of the 30 miles I was bushed. This year I brought my Tikka M91 and shot from a variety of positions till the barrel was steaming hot, then shot some more. Oddly, the rifle does best with the top strap fixed down. It gets nearly MOA with the Wolf light ball, but I'm almost out of that. It does surprisingly well with Albanian crudola.

I've been trying to learn how to use the old style Mosin sights better, and part of the trick seems to be using the "ears" on the rear sight as part of the sighting system. If you incorporate them into your side vision you can get the front sight centered better without having to rely so much on that tiny notch.

I had one unhappy surprise. I was shooting up some 2 year old bear loads and the last one went "dink." I thought it was a dud but checked anyway. Well there's the bullet half way in the lands with a wad of powder stuck behind it! I sprayed some mpro cleaner down there and knocked it out. That would have been a rather memorable kaboom! Though I doubt I would have been able to chamber another round behind it.

Apart from the round with wet powder, everything cycled well. Like most good Finns it was made for shooting a LOT of ammo in a string, and while accuracy decreased a bit it didn't turn into a scattergun as some 91/30's do when overheated.

I experimented with a "Y" attachment to my walking stick. Worked well off hand and sitting, but was a bit wobbly and I see why most people prefer traditional shooting sticks with two points of contact witht the ground.

I was all set to get some video but I wore out my batteries taking videos of the handguns in action. It was too dark by the time I got the bullet cleared anyway.
