The Taurus 709 Slim in 9mm. Nice looking, good size, seems well designed.
I must admit I am not a fan of Taurus, had a few of the PT series that worked fine, not real accurate but OK.

For some reason I keep looking at this gun so any first hand comments appreciated. Good, Bad or the ugly:)

Never owned a Taurus, never shot a Taurus, but every time I see someone ask about them, the responses are generally so-so. Some good, some bad. Most are bad though.

From what I've read, if you're going to spend money on a gun, don't spend it on a Taurus. Like you said, "not real accurate but OK."

OK? If I'm going to buy a gun, I want a 'great' gun. Not an 'OK' gun that is 'not real accurate'

My ugly $.02 opinion

I don't have one, but I do have a newer Taurus, a 24/7 Pro Compact, 9mm. It's been excellent . . . totally reliable and accurate. Years ago Taurus made some fairly crappy guns, but they've leaped ahead in quality and reliability. I think it's safe to say that they're at the leading edge of gun manufacturing technology. However, nothing in life is perfect and when they do manufacture a defective gun, they have a reputation of being less than stellar in their customer service.

The 709 has gotten some very good reviews and I'd certainly say it's worthy of serious consideration. While there have been some problem reports here and there, they don't seem to be any more common than what you would find if researching just about any pistol on the web.

I had have a Kel Tec 32 and 380. I bought the KT PF9 but do to the aggressive grips pattern I sold it. These are my bottom line guns.(not saying they are bad, they work fine)
Looking at the Taurus it certainly looks nicer and appears better made than the Kel Tecs.

My KT 380 shoots as well as my Ruger 380 which is just a nicer looking copy.

If the Taurus had a different name on it, I probably would not hesitate, based on the fit and finish.

Maybe I am just Jaded by all the past bad reviews and discussion on Taurus products. It's not like I need another pocket gun.

I have one, and it is a great gun. The recoil is snappy, but no more than you would expect from a thin light pistol like that. It is very reliable and accurate and fits very well IWB.

BTW, I'm thinking about selling mine, just because I want a pm9 for pocket carry, so pm me if you are interested.

Time too pull out the report I wrote up on one I bought a few weeks ago.
This is my second PT709 the first one(an early version)I sold because it didn't extract WWB ammo reliably and I didn't like that in my carry gun. I really liked everything else about the gun. Its size is excellent for carry, chambered in 9mm para, nice ergos., plenty of accuracy, a thumb safety, adjustable rear sight and DA/SA trigger. The trigger is innovative, it operates in SA for all shooting, with a long take-up and a crisp break, if a round has a dud primer and fails to fire, the trigger automatically reverts to a light DA giving a second strike capability.
I've been wanting to give one of these Taurus's another try. I picked one up the other night, NIB from a fresh production run. The upgrades to the latest 709 I know of are, a metal mag release and redesigned extractor.
Tonight it got its shake down run. I brought 200rounds of ammo consisting of 100rounds 115g WWB, 50 115g Win. Silvertip HPs and 50rounds American Eagle 124g FMJ.
I started right off with the WWB and ran 30 trouble free rounds though. Then I switched to the AE and ran through the entire box of 50 box without issue. Back to the WWB and got to about 120 rounds total through when one got stuck in the chamber and did not extract....It was cleared, I brushed the chamber quickly and continued through the 80 remaining rounds incl the HPs without any further issue.
Out of the box, it was shooting dead center about 6in low from POA, a few turns on the elevation screw and it was on. The guns seem to like the 115g stuff, there was a marked difference between the AE and Win loads. Recoil and flip are totally manageable and really much less then other guns I class with it like the Keltec PF9 and Kahr PM9. The 709 was shot with its stock grip. I do plan to add a Hogue Handal Jr. just for comfort but one is not needed to enhance control, the Slim is a pleasure to shoot as is.
Take down is supposed to be "Glock like" easy but posed a little difficulty. There's a trick to it, that requires pulling the trigger before and after moving the take down pin..takes a bit to figure out. Once apart it appears a solid, simple design and well put together, I liked that it has big metal rails. Cleaning was like any other auto and reassembly was a snap.
Ejection was positive but straight back and up.
All in all a nice defensive concealed carry weapon and great value at $369. includes two mags, a cleaning brush and Taurus's lifetime warranty.

I have a PM 9 and you would think for the price it would be trouble free. Not so!
Mine went back to Kahr 3 times (after the stupid 200 rd "break in" which is ridiculous.
Feeding problems, polish the ramp, replace the barrel finally replace barrel and slide.
Damn accurate gun however.

Anyway it is a fine gun now and my daily carry.

Mike, thanks for the review. The one I am looking at is slightly, very slightly used so I can gt it cheap. It's from one of those guys with more money than sense. Buys new guns all the time, trades them in for something else on and on.

Mine has been 100 % since day one. I've owned it for about a year, have put several hundred rounds through it without one issue. It is very acurate also.

Rodger

Mine has well over a thousand rounds of at least a dozen types of FMJ and JHP 9mm through it including the dreaded WWB. It's within three feet of me right now, and I carry it every day without concern. Enough said.

If you want to find out about the PT709 there is a source for that.
www.taurusarmed.net

There is a board for the 700 series.
I come from "that other forum" and know where the info is over there.

I own PT709 and find it a great shooter. It has been reliable and shoots any 115-124gr round with no troubles. +P can be used with this pistol, but +P+ is a different story. Then again, it is a pocket pistol that is more powerful that the popular .380 ACP pistols that are out there.

Recoil is not as severe as with the Keltec PF-9.

Yes, the Keltec PF-9 is a good carry piece.

Here are some links about the PT709. The Keltec is compared to it in several threads(that's why I picked those out) and one PM-9 made it into one thread.

These are from the actual owners. It's very simple. If you own a PT709, then one can be relevant on the issue. If you own a Keltec PF-9 then those people are relevant in that area. Own a PM-9. No problem. Anything else is irrelevant.

The last link has the holster data in it. Quite a bit of it.

This is about which gun fits you and your needs better. Nothing else matters.

If the Kelt-tec fits you and your needs better, fine.

If the Taurus PT709 does, fine.
If the Kahr is your cup of tea, fine.

I own and use the PT 709, the PT111 Millennium Pro, and the PT132 Mil Pro as well. All work well and are giving sterling service.

I also own many other brands, makes and models of pistols and revolvers as well. Ruger being most prominent. Same goes for rifles. :)

Wow, look at the negative comments from those with NO experience with the gun. That always amazes me.

The 709 is a GREAT gun thus far. Two great things about the gun, shoots great and so easy to conceal. Great conceal carry weapon!

I use the holster from www.concealcity.com

Great gun!

weregunner,

Thanks for putting all those links together. Appreciate the time and effort.:)

Of course it is from a product based forum so there usually is not to much negative to say. Not saying there should be:)
That's why I posted here in a brand neutral forum.

As I stated earlier, I do like the looks, fit, finish of the gun and I can get a like new one for a good price so I just may dive in.:D Not much to lose.

Thanks

Elmar66... I've have got to try one of those :)
All the women will be following you around!

Hey is that a 1911 in your pants or are just glad to see me.:D

Ya, it looks real comfortable sitting down with that size gun.

Usually the case with Taurus. Oh, they have experience READING about the guy who's wife's boss's girl friend's cousin's friend bought one and...yadda, yadda, yadda. It's not an expensive gun. Just buy the danged thing and see for yourself! I have two dozen plus handguns now and probably wouldn't own ANY if I went off net reports. Every brand has a basher in any given thread.

Love It

Had a PM-9 surprisingly give me a lot of problems, bought a Taurus 709 Slim and have had great results. Very reliable and concealable. I have medium sized hands and the fit is perfect. I had always been wary of Taurus but read about new management and goals and I'm glad I bought it. Can't wait to see their 740 Slim and possibly a 745 Slim. Don't listen to those who have "heard about Taurus." It appears to be a changed company.

Mike you will LOVE that holster. Believe it or not it comes in a large that you can wear a full frame 1911.

I just like it because it's handy, comfortable and hides the gun really well.

You can wear it with jeans, short, dress slacks whatever. Here in TX where it's hot, you need something that you can use year round without a lot of clothes to cover it up.

Good luck!

First off the gun forum has the actual users and owners. If the guns did not work there would be nothing positive to say.

Unless one is an "anointed ones" who see all, knows all, and looks down as everyone else as fools, nitwits, and morons, there is no good reason not go with those who have ACTUAL experience and use with the gun in question.

It's a specific gun and the specific gun owners for the most part are there.

If I choose to look for Rugers firearms I go to THE sources which are gun specific. That's at the two Ruger gun forums that are in my avatar.

The majority of users are at those two gun forums and it is easier to gain their knowledge and experience from them then trying to get it at a general gun forum. This place does have its good points and there are a lot of Ruger owners here. But the vast majority of owners and users who know the products best are at the Ruger gun forums. So that is where I go more than not if it is called for.

Same goes for the SIG P6 I own. I'll ask for things here, but the vast collection of knowledge and operators are at the SIG forum. Specific gun, specific gun forum.

I own a Springfield XD-9. I asked or followed developments here and went to the Springfield gun forum to collect as much data as possible. That is a specific gun and a specific gun forum.

So how does that change things? It's a Taurus gun. So going to a Taurus gun forum just makes good common well thought out sense.

Do searches. Ask questions. Read the actual owners facts, data, and observations. That is what one does at ANY gun specific gun forum.

I go to the Kel-Tec forums and read up on things there when I can. They make good guns. I go to many other gun forums as well that are gun specific and read up on things there. Look at the data and facts and go from there.

That can't be done because it is a Taurus forum? That is disrespectful to the people who own guns and makes ALL the gun specific gun forums IRRELEVANT when following that kind of reasoning to it's final conclusion. Their views, experience, and knowledge are all irrelevant according to that line of reasoning. I can't wait to tell these people at the gun specific gun forums that they are all irrelevant and what they write is of no use.

I will use the reasoning as you have stated above. Why not? It's factual and they don't count.

WOW!

That makes this gun forum irrelevant because the owners facts, data, and experience cannot be counted upon either. Does this follow that only the none users opinions count and they have no actual experience or knowledge about the guns makes them superior to those who do?

Besides what is written here by anybody is anecdotal and cannot be verified.

So this is not about someone who wants to know about the PT709 or the Kel-tec PF-9, both guns that are good in their own right.

This is about the self anointed ones who are superior to anyone not from here and that they deem unworthy.

If the guns at the specific gun forums do not work the people there will say so.

Same goes for here.

The Taurus forum, like many other gun specific forums, are not tied in any way to the company. Or should not be. The Taurus forum is not tied in any way to the company. The owners of Taurus products are just like anyone else here or at any other forum site.

So the links ,data, and knowledge are relevant. Even if you choose not use it though God only knows why one would not use a much needed resource at their disposal. That is unless use of knowledge, data, and experience were not to be used anyway from the start.

If you choose not to use the resource that is up to you. But then this seems to have little to do with actually needing real time data, experience,or facts on that particular model.

I will add this. This gun forum is a good source of info as well.

There are also other places to look for info as well. The links were for source info only and nothing else.

If someone wants to find out about the PT709 then here is as good a source as any there is. Always been that way. It's the people who denigrate a brand based on "conventional wisdom" that is not wise and those who have little or no actual experience with a certain piece.

As for some people's experience with pistols or the PT709, gun break in periods are a normal thing. 200-300 rounds seems to be the norm and documented by the credentialed experts en mass.

It is also customary and needed to try as many brands of ammo in a pistol to see which is relaible, functions best and is also accurate enough to use for defense. Not just one kind of ammo is to be used, but as many as is realistically possible.

It is also a good idea to properly clean and lube a new gun prior to taking it to the range for tests and related things. That includes all the nooks, crannies, firing pin hole, and other places that grime, preservative, or other lubrication can collect.

Here is also a bit about compact or subcompact semi-autos.
http://www.taurusarmed.net/forums/index.php?topic=6716.0

It is also apparent that smaller guns are finicky about the ammo they like and the number of rounds they will digest before needing a thorough and proper cleaning. Brand makes no difference.

I've done that with my PT709 and it has functioned flawlessly.

I am also kicking this around. I carry a nice heavy Makarov most of the time. However, when my back hurts me more than normal, I'd like to have something that doesn't weigh as much. I tried a S&W Model 637 Airweight. Nice little revolver, but I just don't care for small handled revolvers. The 709 Slim is about the best sized 9mm on the market from what I can tell. Hey OP, if you get one before I do, make sure you give us a range report.

My wife bought a 709 Slim for me as a 20th anniversary gift. I've had no malfunctions in the first 130+ rounds fired throught the gun. I've mostly shot +P and +P+ HP loads (might as well test with what I would carry). I did wipe out all of the white grease from inside the pistol prior to shooting and lube with regular gun oil. Trigger seems to get better with each shot.

Just for the record. I can bring 16 pages of links from theactual owners and users of the PT709 here if need be.

That has to do with data and facts on that particular model.

I own two taurii. Both flawless.

I have a small P/T job in a gun shop since I retired. Mentioned this taurus bashing to the boss, then why do we sell so many he said.

OP 709 - slim is a neat weapon
