I work at a gunshop parttime and we got 2 in about a month ago. I looked one over and played with it. First off it's big, it's S&W L frame size. Swapping the cylinder is easy enough and the bluing was nice. Trigger is so-so it's typical Taurus. I personally wouldn't want one but I already have a few Ruger Single sixes that are 22lr/22mag convertibles. Your best bet is to find one at a gunshop and feel for yourself. If a full size double action 22 is what you want I would try and find an older S&W model 17 but that's just my opinion
I liked the feel a lot of the one I held at a gun show, but I did not buy it. I had a Model 94 from 1989 to 1996, and it was a fine piece (22LR only.) I let my then-wife keep it when we divorced. I also own a Model 66 (.357 Magnum) purchased in 1987, and it's been a decent performer as well.
I think the Ruger SP-101-22, also available in that dual-cylinder package, might be an overall better gun, and will be priced accordingly. But, I feel that I personally can get lifetime service from either.
Edit: My bad, the rimfire SP-101 is only available in .22LR; there is no Magnum cylinder option. I must have been thinking of the Single-Six.
I have a Tracker (.22lr only) I bought a year or so ago. As noted, Trackers are BIG. Mine has the 6-inch barrel, and I really wish I'd gotten the 4-inch instead. I have several hundred rounds through the thing and have had no problems whatsoever.
Really good idea. A DA Convertible revolver gives the shooter many possibilities for field and training use. I like Taurus fine, but IMO the gun is too expensive (~$500) and Taurus resale isn't good enough for me to buy one. I'd like to see the SP101 done this way.
I have a regular 22 in stainless. It shoots well, and I like the balance and the grip which took some getting used to. I don't like it as much as the Single Six, but I like it. It takes some getting use to the grip but now it is comfortable. I have a little over 1.5K through it. A fun shoot.
I have a 992. As mentioned, it is a heavy revolver - weighs more than my Model 66 .357. It's a typical Taurus revolver - shoots well, looks okay. Good value and reliable. Cylinder change is a few seconds, and performance on both .22 versions is good. I have over 1,000 .22LR and probably 250 .22 magnum rounds through it and have had no issues with it.
