m2stven,

I have to agree with your CZ comment. I have several CZ's and just picked up a CZ-83 last week, but still haven't fired it, yet.

It is very well made, beautiful in fact. It's the nickel plated version.

Am I the only one who thinks the "Slim" etched into the side of the slide looks goofy?

Im the other guy M2stven was talking about about having light fire strike issues. I've put almost 200 rounds through it and had more than half with issues. The first day all i had was Blazer AL and it jammed almost every time. The casings would actually buldge up in the same location and would get stuck in the barrel so I'd have to punch it out with a screwdriver or shake it loose. I finally found some brass ammo but still had 2 misfires with PMC Bronze and i dont think it was the ammo because the primer was barely dented. The range gunsmith thought the barrel might not be the correct size.
But besides that the gun seems like it would be a good CCW. I carried it in an IWB holster in the small of my back which was the most comfortable place for me. I live in texas so it'd be impossible to conceal a glock. This gun fit really flat in a short and t-shirt. I wear cargo shorts and the gun barely fits but it does fit if you have big pockets. Taurus has a great customer service and they picked it up the next day. They said it'd take 5-6 weeks so i should have it by the end of the month. Im not worried about it because i still have to wait about 10 more weeks till i get my CHL so i cant carry it anyways. And if i need a pistol, I still have my XDm40 which has been an awesome gun i bought at a gun show. I knew there was a gamble in buying a new model but i just couldnt wait for people's reviews haha. I've seen plenty of good reviews about the gun shooting so im sure my issue can be fixed.

Walther PPS vs Taurus 709

I have been a collector for years. Aside of just plain liking guns, I have lately been on a mission to find the Best carry (for me). Carried a WW2 vintage .380 Belgian Browning back when I wore suits. Lately, I have carried nines.
Recently purchased two pistols: Walther PPS.40 and Taurus Mill-Pro (PT111) 9mm (12+1). I'll just say the Walther is superior; have put 500 round through it with amazing accuracy and NO problems at all. The Taurus Mill-Pro-9 has good bones - better than average accuracy at 15 yards - good balance for a shortie. Big negative: mag release is in a BAD place - right under my thumb; and the button/retainer spring is insufficient to hold the mag when shooting (now, this is my gun-- don't know if it applies to all). It's a bit unnerving to have the gun go "snap" and feel the mag hit your foot!
Forgive me for being long-winded, I do have a destination with this.
I have held a Taurus 709. Not comparing price, it is similar to the Walther in several respects (and the "baby" McGlock). I am going to sell the Mill-Pro-111. Thought of replacing is with the "709". Compare/Contrast info (so far) is nonexistent. I like the attitude on this weblog, and thank everyone for allowing me to join. Your thoughts are expected. Best regards-- I'll be back :cool

are you kidding...... ? Ruger makes a lot under $600, as does Taurus, as does Berretta for that matter, as does FN, and Smith and Wesson, and CZ..... you could write volumes on great guns for under $600.

So today I called Taurus, they called Fed Ex, and within 2 hours they had a fed-ex guy at my door with a box and label - prepaid

Wow! That would seem to be a big improvement over past Taurus warrenty stories. Turn-around time will really tell the tale.

I saw the 709 at last Saturday's gun show, seemed pretty good gun for ~$350 they were asking, but I was looking for alternate caliber AR uppers, picked up a 9mm and 5.7x28.

I bought the Taurus 709 a month ago in stainless steel black. Great looking gun and conceals nicely. For having big hands, I was surprised how well it felt in my grip. On the first day of shooting it, had some bad luck. On the 20th shot, the gun appeared jammed. Upon investigation, I found that the reason it jammed was because the spring mechanism broke. Not the spring itself, but the round metal lip that holds the larger spring at tension. I was a bit disappointed as you could imagine. I took it back to the place of purchase and they were nice enough to swap out the spring mechanism from another new 709 they had, so it was back to the range to finish up my ammo. I like the way the gun shoots, nice recoil, decent accuracy. But before I finished shooting 100 rounds, I had 3 times where the slide would stay open and not feed the last round. This seemed to happen with the same magazine each time. Also, I noticed that the main screw on the spring mechanism was almost all the way backed out. A few more shots and it would have fallen out and disassembled the springs completely.

After cleaning the gun, I used some medium strength Loctite to keep that screw in place. I then checked out the magazine that I suspected was causing the failure to feed the last round (which seems to be a common problem from what I understand). Sure enough, the yellow plastic pusher was binding on the way up a little bit after I pushed down on it. I ended up using the handle end of some pliers to reshape the inner walls of the magazine so that the yellow plastic pusher moved freely. These magazines are thin and can get out of shape easy if hit or pressed the wrong way.

So I think I worked out the bugs on this gun. I still need to go to the range to test it out and to rebuild my confidence in this gun, and then I'll use it as a carry. I really want this gun to work out.

range report

Finally went to the range today. Good news, shot 150 rounds with no problems. It looks like I worked those bugs out after all. Especially the magazine issue. My confidence is restored in this gun.

Questions to the experts: I guess I never noticed this before with autos, but does this look like a normal spent casing? (see pics) I thought the dimple was supposed to be perfectly round, like when fired from a revolver. This looks like the fire pin was still in the primer as the casing was being ejected, causing that side mark.

Thx.

I really enjoy shooting my 709. The recoil is not unpleasant and actually gives the gun a real character. It's comfortable and since i've had it back from Taurus - it's been perfect.

I got my Judge back from Taurus today. Same 4 week turnaround. It's perfect now if it won't unscrew itself this time. I'll let everyone know if it will shoot more than 20 shells before it falls apart. I'm still impressed with the overall quality of the materials used in the gun. It's a "honey".

wpbgary: Did you try to fire the cartridge twice? I got those 'double' prints when i struck them a second time trying to get them to fire.

The spent casings from my 709 look just like this.

Attended a Taurus factory sale at a local gun shop yesterday (Taurus president, Bob Morrison in attendance). Got a chance to shoot the "Slim" at the indoor range. I was only able to shoot one mag (7 rounds), but was very impressed with this gun: Very surprised at how accurate it was; very impressed with the trigger pull - some take up required (which I'm quite used to), but crisp in breakover (I liked it a lot); recoil must have been easy because I didn't think about it; the grip felt a bit small compared to my regular compact sized 9mm, but I handled it well as evidenced by accuracy I achieved; no malfunctions (only 7 rounds).

I think I need this gun. Really, it's quite impressive to shoot.

Well, let me see, bought the gun on Saturday, shot it on Sunday, sent it back to Taurus on Tuesday. Yeah that sums up my experience with the 709.
They may even send it back to me fixed, someday.

Thanks for the info, I'm glad that's normal. Yeah, that marking on the primer is just from one trigger pull, not two. Sounds like primer swipe is ok in auto's. Thx.

Hey Sauer Grapes, what did your 709 do that you had to send it back to Taurus?

I'd like to say that since I've go my pistol returned from Taurus to have a 'light strike' problem fixed, and after putting probably 500 through it, I can say it's 100 percent reliable and a joy to shoot. Mine is approx as accurate as my Kahr E9 or any other pistol I have. It pretty much hits where I aim it. It's really fun to shoot (a huge plus), is not fatiguing, conceals well, and appears to be quite rugged. I'm going to give it a definite buy now. I think this little gun is a winner.

I fired one at an indoor range. The trigger pull was long and smooth with a long reset like a KelTec. The 709 was better finished than a KelTec and looked nicer. I liked the gun and thought it would conceal well. The example I fired would not shoot to the point of aim and it was pretty far off low and left. We all fired it to the same POI.

I think a lot of models come with the sights out of adjustment. My CZ75 had to be adjusted , for my eyes and hand anyway. My Slim is quite accurate.

I'm about 99.9% sold on getting one at this point.

Sorry, newb question time: could you (or anyone else) post some pics of said spring and show where it's located? Once I get one, I'll look for that spring to work itself loose and Loctite as necessary. Thanks in advance...

Taurus 9mm slim

Because this old thread shows up at the top when I google Taurus PT709, I wanted to reply. I own it. It is a great gun. It shoots very well, I have never experienced a jam with it in several hundred rounds. Great CCW.

I have a number of Taurus's and all function flawlessly and quite accurately, the 709 included. I also have a PT-111 in my collection and like it just as much in every regard. I load and shoot stout jacketed HS6 and Longshot reloads though them all and have had zero FTF's, cycling issues, or any other concerns after hundreds of rounds put through each of them.

I don't ever shoot any factory through any of my firearms though, so I can't offer any feed back regarding factory ammunition.

I have had a 709 slim for my daily carry since dec. 2010, and have put approx. 800 rds of various ammo through it, including bulk federal and winchester hardball, hornady and winchester hollow points, and plenty of my own handloads. It has been 100% reliable. Accuracy for self defense is acceptable. The trigger pull on mine has gone from 7.5 lbs. when new, down to 4.75 lbs. now. As I said, it's got around 800 rds. through it, and I've dry fired it probably another 300 times. I carry it IWB at 4:00 in a Bianchi #6D-10A with the snap flap cut off. I've carried it daily for 12+ hours a day for better than a year and a half, and have had no issues. I've carried a 1911, a Glock, a Ruger SP101, and a couple different smith revolvers, but I've never carried a gun that is so comfortable and easily concealable as the Taurus Slim. I love mine.
