Tax return time

Well Ive got both my tax return checks and I would like to buy a gun or 2.

Im thinking of either a Ruger 10/22 or the S&W M&P15-22.

If I get the Ruger I would either get another shotgun like an 870 and bank the rest. Or skip the shotgun and put the rest towards the car payment.

If I get the S&W I would only buy that and save the rest/car payment.

I just want this for fun and plinking. I have heard that the new 10/22's arent so accurate without a better barrel and trigger group and all that stuff, is this true?

Opinions? Opinions on other rifles like marlin, savage?

I just bought a Savage BTV with the scope package from Dick's for $348. Most accurate rifle I've ever shot. WAY better than the $600+ 10/22 I built. Just make sure you get one with the accu-trigger. First group I shot with mine after sight in (5 shots) measured 1/4".

The 15-22's are cool but use proprietary magazines which, in my opinion, sucks. The SIG522's use black dog mags ($20 each) and are supposed to be the best EBR clone available. Great trigger, super reliable, and lots of fun!

If you already have an ar15, how about a CMMG conversion in stainless? I got mine from CDNN for right around $200 and I gotta say, they should require a tax stamp for that thing.. It's that much fun. Shoots ragged hole groups out of my 1:9 twist 16" barrel using iron sights too, so accuracy is pretty good.

The 10/22s do take some work to get them going. Bone stock mine would shoot 6" groups at 25 yards or bigger. I got the butler creek stock and barrel set which helped a lot. Once I polished my trigger parts too far trying to improve the pull (got a couple nice triple taps instead), I spent another $80 or so on a new trigger group. I also modified pretty much everything else but the bolt and the receiver. It only fed reliably from stock rotary mags that I had to sit and tune to the action to make them feed reliably. On a good day, if I really took the time to set the bags up just right, it would shoot 1/4" 5 shot groups. Again, the savage I just bought shot 1/4" first group after sight in.

I haven't any experience with the Marlins. I've never liked any of the ones I've handled enough to buy one, although I've been contemplating a Model 60 just to see if it really is that much better than the 10/22.

Hope this helps!

I've got an older 10/22 (metal trigger group) that my Dad got me when I was young. I've always been able to shoot acceptable groups with it stock. I never spent much time punching paper with it, but from what I remember, I was pretty able to get all 10 within a 4" group at 50 yards consistently. I put one of those carbon bull barrels and a stock with the built in bipod on it and it was a tack driver, but was so light that I couldn't use it offhand. I put the factory stuff back on it and am back to dropping squirrels. If you are just going to be plinking, I think you'd do just fine with a 10/22. If you get more serious, they are very cheap to throw a bull barrel on.

One thing I will add is this: You will NEVER regret getting out of debt. Whatever your car payment is right now, imagine if you had that much just freed up every month. Adds up pretty quick.

Ive been looking at the Spikes Tactical .22 conversion. But Im concerned they wouldnt be as accurate than a dedicated .22 rifle.

The SIG522 looks great but my only concern is that being in NJ I cant have the stock that comes on it, does anyone know if they come with a fixed stock?
