Well, hopefully this pans out for her. I wonder with Ted as her husband this will turn into a big deal or if it will quietly go away and she pleads to some lesser charge.

DFW AIRPORT (CBSDFW.COM) – The wife of rocker Ted Nugent told TSA screeners she forgot she was carrying a loaded gun in her bag as she tried to get through security at DFW Airport.

Shemane Nugent, 51, was arrested on Thursday morning, after security detected a loaded Smith & Wesson .38 Special revolver at the bottom of her carry on bag. The pistol was loaded with five rounds of ammunition. Another 10 rounds were located in the side pocket of the gun’s carrying case.

This happens all the time at DFW (and I would guess, at other airports as well). About a year ago someone cleared security, got on a plane and then TSA realized she had a gun in her bag. Stopped (IIRC) all ground traffic, eventually had the aircraft return to gate, everyone off, she was detained, everyone was re-screened, happy ending. She was not charged to the best of my knowledge.

I probably hear one story per month like this, and I'm sure I don't hear them all. It is invariably a law-abiding citizen who 'forgot". I have never heard of someone being prosecuted. If it were a felon, I would hope it would be a bit bigger deal.

It will really be interesting because of who she is. Let's see who gets involved. Eric Holder (behind the scenes) anyone?

Mike Huckabee's son did the same thing several years ago with no charges that I'm aware of, but then, his dad was governor at the time.

I've never understood how these people forget. I mean, I could completely understand a purse or some EDC bag issue, but do these people have carry-on bags they take everywhere with them that they forget has a gun? I've got an EDC backpack, but I would never dream of taking it to an airport. On the other hand, I pack my carry-on specifically for the trip and go through a mental TSA checklist the whole time.

Unless a person stores guns in every piece of luggage they own, and doesn't bother ever removing them, I find it difficult to believe that one would "forget" they had a gun in the carry-on. I think it more likely that they wanted to have the gun available in their destination location and thought they could "hide" it in the bottom of a suitcase. Maybe 30 or 40 years ago, when there was literally no security involved in getting on an aircraft, being caught with a gun on your person could just be an oversight, in today's world where everyone knows about TSA involvement in airline travel it is just not credible to think the gun was "forgotten".

That all said, I hope that this matter is not made into a big deal because of her husband's known support for gun rights and hunting.

It's happened to me - twice. Not at an airport but inadvertently taking my loaded CCW into a secure area and not realizing it was in my fanny pack (this was years ago) until I went to put my fanny pack in a desk drawer (Why is this thing so heavy? Ahh Sh..!). I passed thru 3 security checkpoints both times.

I've carried concealed continuously since 1984. I don't even notice I'm wearing a gun - it's THAT casual.

Do you carry concealed on a daily basis?

It absolutely can easily happen to someone who CC's on a regular basis. Complacency...? We aren't talking about accidentally leaving it on a park bench in a playground. We are talking about being so used to having it on your person that you would notice its absence before you would notice its presence.
A belt knife is a deadly weapon. Would you be constantly thinking of how big a deal it is to have it?

Something like this (carrying where it's not allowed or having an ND) has happened to hundreds of people, and the vast majority of them probably never expected it would happen to them.

This was in 1987, so before all the modern security BS, but it still went through two xray machines and one physical hand inspection. So, it happens.....

My bet is that it was an honest mistake because flying with a firearm is so easy.

I managed to carry a loaded Glock 17 in a truck console into
Canada some years ago. Tossed the ammo and took it totally apart
and stashed the parts in various places for the return trip.
Never did that again....it can happen.

I would surmise that the opposite is true. Those who are deeply familiar with their firearm and are familiar with its presence are more likely to be ready and able to effectively use it if the time comes.

You know what makes me a little nervous? People who are obviously carrying concealed guns and are uncomfortable with that fact. The ones who constantly shift their gun around under their clothes, pat at it to reassure themselves its still there, rest their hand on it so that it obviously prints....Those people aren't familiar with CC'ing, imo....or they are carrying illegally, and are nervous and self conscious about it.
but I'll bet they are really good about remembering they have a gun....all the time. Some people can't seem to think of anything else and make it painfully obvious as they can't stop playing with it even as they try to keep it "concealed".
I am much more at ease around people who give the impression that they feel their carry gun is just another tool on the belt. Second nature. Not given another thought until the need arises.

silicosys4.......I am with TheoShooter. In this case we are talking about someone carrying in a bag, not on their person. But as Shooter said, forgetting it is in a bag is a big deal. I would bet a person is far more likely to lose an item or have it stolen if they don't even remember it is there. Also if a person didn't know it was there, they wouldn't be reaching in the bag during a gunfight......because they didn't even know their tool was in the bag.

Don't forget that because you are "so comfortable" with your gun compared to a novice carrier that you mention, you might end up in jail for carrying right into a federal building or something.

You need to find a balance between carrying and comfort, and everyone probably eventually does. But truly forgetting about a gun in a bag and strolling around with it, seems like a comical notion to me. Who would do that?
