The write-up in the American Rifleman got me thinking about a SW compact in 9mm. The trigger set up sounds odd, well at least the "cocked striker double action" does. The afore mentioned trigger setting sounds like it might make the trigger close to the one on my Steyr, anyone know this for sure? Also how does it point, is it Glockish or more like a 1911? Also how fat is the SW99s compared to others? Any other information concerning the SW99 is welcome as well.
 
I tried one in .40S&W a couple years ago. I hated it after the first shot...but that was mostly due to the trigger. It just felt plain weird; even in single action. Pointed pretty good though, and wasn't uncomfortable at all. Better than a Glock in that regard. :D

The trigger takes some getting used to, no doubt. The good news is that you can fit it to your hand via different backstraps, and the grip isn't any bigger than say a 92 or other high cap. In fact it feels smaller.

I think it points more like a Glock. Back to the trigger, there are three ways to carry it- single action trigger forward, SA trigger back, and DA. The decocker is in an odd position, but you get used to it. There is some play in the trigger, but again after several hundred rounds you can live with it.

Care of the gun is easy, leaning more towards a Glock. It'll run all day long (at least mine will). It carries quite well on the hip and conceals well too.

Accuracy- if the shooter does his/ her part, the gun will too.

Durability- I watched a squib followed up by a live round. Locked the gun up and bulged the barrel, and after a barrel change the gun was back up and running. I don't like the mag followers- basically flat plastic, that could definately be changed again.
 
We had a S&W rep out at a range today (sponsored by a gunshop...free shooting! :D), and I got a chance to try both the SW99 and SW99 compact (as well as a bunch of other S&W guns), both of them in .40S&W. I was able to shoot well enough with the fullsize, but my group went to heck with the compact. It was the same for me when I had a bersa...I can't shoot worth a damn with the small guns.

I did really like the SA/DA trigger on them though.
 
I like mine pretty well. It's a .40SW. I'm going to keep it. The trigger was relatively easy to get used to. The only thing I don't like is that damned raised area on the inside bottom of the triggerguard. Under recoil, it hits my finger and gets to be a little annoying after a while at range. It's thinner than my best friend's Glock 27, it's also taller. I get one less round though. Steyr M9 (or S9) has a far better trigger.
 
I own the SW99 in .45. I carry it everyday on my job as a armored car guard. I'm quite happy with this pistol. It fits my large hands well, and points very naturally. I've only put about 300 or so rounds through it so far, but they have went through without a hitch. If you do your part, the gun is quite accurate as well.

I wouldn't mind getting another one of these in a different caliber in the future :D
 
Well, it might bwe that my SW99 in .45 is still new but the SA trigger sucks IMHO. There's a lot of takup and that's over a rough gravel road to boot! Ever want to make a standard 5# Glock trigger feel like a 1911 match grade trigger? Shoot a SW99 then shoot a Glock right afterwards! :cuss: Seriously though, getting good groups from the bench a real chore! Matter of fact, I still can't say weather it's an accurate gun or not compared to my other .45s because of it. Others have said that the tigger gets better with time and it does a lot better at combat shooting where the trigger isn't playing as much of a factor. I'm still holding out hope that after a few thousand rounds that it will get better but if it don't, it's going down the road for another Sig or HK instead!
