Went to the indoor range near me for some pistol time. Normally I shoot at my place but weather was sucky and decided I needed to mingle with other shooters. Shoulda known better! :D

Got to the range with my TZ99, P89 & a Taurus PT945, and began shooting - mainly just doing double-taps, goofing off that sort of thing. After a while, two guys fill the lanes next to me. A group of 2 guys on my left shooting a couple new guns, lots of inexperience and unsafe handling but the RO was on top of them. Nothing new there.

The guy on my right breaks out a James-Bond case filled with hi-end Para's, custom shop stuff and very nice. I complimented him on the guns, we shared some chit-chat about them, but I could tell he was waaaay proud of them, wouldn't quit talking. I'm on the range clock, so I kinda excuse myself after 5 minutes of non-stop self-love from the guy. We both get to shooting. All is well for about 1 minute.

After a couple of shots, he leans over, tapping me on the shoulder (a no-no), and asks if I can hold off so he can keep his brass from mixing with mine (we're both shooting .45's and mine are ejecting all over the floor by him). I said politely "I only have about 10 minutes left to shoot this gun", figuring this would tell him that I have no intention of quitting so he can get keep his brass neatly organzed on my dime. No such luck. He goes on and on about how he's really needing to watch his brass and pick up every last one, cause he's a competitor and blah-blah. Ugh. Now, I'm really hating the guy but I'm still a nice boy scout so I say "I'll shoot a mag or two of 9mm so do your thing". Fine, we get down to shooting some more, tho I'm kind of fuming at his boldness.

So, after a few minutes, he's done with that gun or whatever and says I'm good to go. So, I put a target out at 25 yards and go at it with the .45. Now, this is your basic PT945, no mods, just a stock gun. Even so, I kept 24 shots in a 8" circle at 25 yards in a group about the size of my hand outstretched. Pretty good in my book....my hand's not that big.

As I get the target back off the trolley, he's standing behind me and goes "Whoa, that thing's not shooting so good, is it?". I whipped around with a stunned look on my face and said "Excuse me?". He goes "Well, my P14 shoots groups half that size, look at these", and he shows me a target that's marginally better than mine. Fist sized groups instead of hand-sized ones. Also, his has very nice target sights and I'm sure a delightful trigger. I'm looking at it thinking it should shoot smaller than what he's showing me.

I said "My gun is a $400 combat pistol, it's shooting nearly as good as yours, what's your point?". He gives me this really quizzical look like he doesn't understand what I'm saying. He goes "Well, my Kimber so and so shot like that and I sold it".

I'm trying not to be confrontational with the guy, but he won't leave me alone and I just want to shoot. I should have just turned around and ignored him but of course my mouth started moving. "This isn't a contest guy, I just put 24 rounds into someone's head at 25 yards, which is pretty good, and I spent a quarter of what you did on my gun". This pisses him off and he replys "Well, you got ripped off". I blurted back at him "I didn't come here for your opinion dude".

So, he just rolls his eyes, turns around and goes back to his stall. I shot one more mag and was at the end of my time and got my stuff together and left, but I fumed all the way out, mainly at myself for letting him get to me. I really hate that kind of crap. Absolutely no need to be like that, but there's always someone at the range who's in a pissing match over "my gun is bigger than yours". Ready piss someone off, over nothing.

Oh well, just felt like venting, enjoy my rant. Sadly, I bet everyone on this forum will identify with my experience.

Maybe because gunners in Massachusetts are a dying breed and they know it, I've never had anyone speak to me like that on the range. Now that I live in New Hampshire, maybe it will happen. I'll just say "nobody's perfect," and leave it at that.

As was said in another thread, if you speak to someone like that, maybe they'll get frustrated, quit the hobby and start voting for the antis!

Trust me, I could have been worse, and I doubt that this guy would quit his very expensive hobby - he seemed very pleased with himself. I imagine that people like him enjoy the one-upmanship more than shooting itself, and to be perfectly frank the sport is better off without him. Anti, or not.

There are lots of guys who enjoy a meaningless competition, often when they're the only one in it. I don't stand at the urinal to compare my manhood. I'm there to pee.

Blah... Sorry that happened to you at the range.
A place I used to go to in NYC had some really, really cool members.
Never had stuff like that happen there.
All of us shot different types of pistols. Inexpensive, mid-range, and very, very expensive.
All of the guys who had Uber-pistols never showed any type of snobbery.
In fact, once I got to know them, they would let me shoot quite a few rounds through theirs and vice-versa.
Bunch of gentlemen they were.

:)

I'm sorry, I meant "you" in general, not you personally. I should have used "one." I have no problem with your reaction.

Swingset ...

I can fully sympathize .... and expect I woulda been well frustrated too. Seems like you were being more than patient and reasonable . and yet the bozo keeps comin back for more.! Sheesh .... and probably some poor woman has to live with the jerk!

Man - am I ever thankful not to have to resort often to indoor formal ranges and have to risk being exposed to dudes like that!

At least he could shoot, most people who make those comments can't shoot worth a damn :D

Actually to be fair almost everyone I have run into at the range all have been very cordial...sorry about that guy :(

Next time start throwing yours into his target, then explain it's your piece of crap gun and can't be helped, wished you had a better one like his.

Don't get me wrong, I don't often encounter snobs or jerks, but when if there's a bozo on the line, he's always next to me.

Oh well. I'll brave the Ohio weather today and shoot at my range, where the only bozo is me! :D

You probably should've clamed up sooner, as all you did was get ticked off yourself, rather than make any lasting point to the doofus. Live and learn; shooting by yourself is probably a start. If you want company, invite a friend.

I've been in similar situations. Try one of two solutions that usually work.

If you are the better shot, say nothing but run him into the ground. You're targets will speak for you.

If he is the better shot, don't get into a discussion about guns and such. Simply say that he's obviously more experienced then you, and it's clear that you need more practice. Since your time on the clock is limited will he please let you shoot now, and maybe some discussion can come later. Of course "later" never comes.

If he really won't leave you alone, speak to the range officer/range management. Since you are shooting "on the clock" they are responsible to make sure you're not interupted.

I've had that happen to me a couple times. My solution was to switch to 10mm and then shoot hot loads for about 15 minutes.

Usually I found myself alone. :D

Although this guy could be classified as a "busybody", and was annoying, I would have handled it slightly differently.

When he commented about the groups your pistol was delivering, if I was you, I would have answered that the performance was not bad for a economical self-defense arm, and that you were satisfied with it for its' intended use.

That sort of response would be not insulting, factual, and may actually get the guy quit blathering on.....maybe.:D

If he continues to rail on you and how "crappy" your gun shot, then I might tell him to chill out more forcefully.

This guy might like to chat with other shooters, but he should do it without insulting the other guy's equipment or skills.:scrutiny:

I always enjoy fawning over the great shooter and babble something like, "Gee, could I give that a try? I doubt that I'll ever get to shoot something like that.", and then try my hardest to make overlapping holes at the same range they were making rasin bread. Tends to shut them up.

I must just be lucky. In some of the other threads about safety issues, I've commented that I don't have problems at the indoor ranges I go to. I Usually don't have problems with people talking to me or criticizing my shooting or guns.

Perhaps it's the fact that I ignore them. Maybe it's the .44, I dunno. :)

Seriously though, I don't have these sorts of issues...maybe I'm putting out some kind of 'Leave this dude alone' aura.

Funny...I may be on to something there. I have the same problem with women ignoring me too! :(

"After a couple of shots, he leans over, tapping me on the shoulder (a no-no), and asks if I can hold off so he can keep his brass from mixing with mine (we're both shooting .45's and mine are ejecting all over the floor by him)."

LOL. I think I would have told him that he needs to find a private range. Was this at NASR?

Guess I should feel lucky that I can go out in the country to a private range and shoot. There, I don't have to put up with that kind of disrespect.

Sorry you had to deal with his crap. I would say next time to talk to the range master(and count to 10 and breath deeply before saying anything back :) )

Got that right.... When I went through the academy, one of the guys there had a BEAUTIFUL colt python, had a ton of mods done to it, trigger shoe, some kind of double action trigger stop, nice sights, and who knows what else....

He starts looking round at everyone and then singled ME out and tells me how he is gonna 'kick my [adam sam sam] when it comes time to score targets in this class."

Some people are just Jerks...

If you are the better shot, say nothing but run him into the ground. You're targets will speak for you.

And THAT was exactly what I did. In fact, interestingly enough it was what everyone in the whole darn class did. Even those that had to borrow school-revolvers did so...

Bittom line was that the loudmouth with his tricked out pistol finished at or VERY near the BOTTOM of the entire class. :D :D :D

No surprise really.... It aint the gun that makes the shot.

Stuff like the story above just goes to prove how counter productive some of us can be even in our own backyard with brother shooters... how unfortunate.

I agree. You let him push your buttons.
You should have just told him to leave you alone.

Maybe time a little cross lane shooting ... say one or two shots outside the black area (circles) of his target. (Assuming safe background at range.)

Let him think the "bad shots" came from his gun .... enjoy watching him panic as he tries to figure out what went wrong!

/Rusty

P.S. Don't let people like that push your bottons. You have hearing protection, use it!

sounds like,,,

you should carry some really loud really dirty ammo for just such an event

so the next time it happens you can choke the offender with nice big clouds of smoke

and maybe even arrange it so your spent brass keeps dingin' him on the noggin'

I've been at the range with people that talk and talk nonstop. It's fine if one is inquisitive about your guns but geesh, I'm there to shoot 'em not show 'em. A few times I'd get the person that has to have the "best". 'Course, even then it's always the guns fault that it won't shoot. :banghead: Then you get the fella that has his "pretty large caliber" 9mm and goes on and on telling you how powerful it is but that he can handle it. What to do...? Outshoot 'em with the cheap ol' Ruger, agree that that 9mm sure is a heavy hitter and move on to the hot magnum loads in the .44 and .45. A number of these loads usually also helps the conversation folks from staying long. :neener:
