At the end of each year, I try to reconcile the debt for people who have helped me during that year, by thanking them for their contributions to my continued enlightenment.

Just wanted to take a moment to thank the mods and administrators of TheHighRoad for providing a compelling, clean, informative, and highly educational gun rights bulletin board.

I know you guys think that all the tedious work you put in to keeping things running smoothly goes (largely) as a thankless job, but it doesn't. Truly, your work is appreciated.

This year I've progressed from being a shooter to a firearms instructor, in very large part thanks to things that I've learned on this board over the last few years. Transitioning from a practitioner to an educator is not an easy or trivial task, but the combined knowledge on this board made it all go just a little easier.

Anyway, hats off to you guys, and thanks.

Trent: You have succinctly (Dare I say eloquently?) stated what so many of us have thought but didn't take the time or effort to write it down. Normally, I tend to stay away from forums, as I find most are nothing more than places for people to let you know what geniuses they are. However there is a wealth of great information on THR and that is only because of the quality of the moderators, their knowledge, and their ability to keep things on track. My hat is also off to the fine group and to you for moving me to say so.

Thanks to all, and have a merry and joyous Christmas.

Trent and SC Shooter, you probably said what most members are thinking. I found this forum by accident because someone commented on my product. I tell customers that I meet at gunshows about this forum. Maybe it will get more knowing members. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I don't care if people think that that politically incorrect.

No problem. We'll extend your billing cycle to 90 days, if that will help.

:what:

:neener:

HAHA!

How about a couple extra posts in Classifieds when I clean my gun room out this winter, if that's OK. :)

(I have a lot of old baggage to unload; out with the old, to make room for the new....)

I first found THR as a young fifteen year old just getting into guns a few years ago. I soon had people kindly and helpfully answering my questions and giving me all sorts of advice and encouragement with every gun project and endeavor me or my twin brother have needed help with. I had no true "gun person" to help me into the firearms (and pocket knives) world, and this awesome forum has done that for me, and by extension, my family. Largely because of you, my whole family, my uncle and his family, and my grandpa have all found a whole new hobby to enjoy together. If it weren't for shooting and guns, I wouldn't be nearly so close to my uncle and grandfather. I also have gotten to share shooting with 2 of my best friends.

So thanks and congratulations, my Dad is now a Chaplain's Assistant serving in the Army Reserve, my grandfather decided to get back into shooting and learn to defend my grandma and great grandmother with the .357 lever action THR helped me choose, my Mom is working on getting her CCW and just a week ago got her first handgun that I am teaching her how to use, my Dad got his CCW and has become very proficient and is saving up for a rifle. My Uncle took up shooting, and so did his wife and son. He now has his CCW and carries daily, and he and his wife are ready to protect their family.

My twin brother now refurbishes Mosins (you guys taught him how), builds Saigas (you guys taught him how) and is an awesome rifleman who is a Rifleman and Instructor for Project Appleseed, and shoots crazy good scores on the 400 yard targets with only a sling for support with his beloved 5.45 Saiga (he'd marry it if he could). I shot great out to 350 yards at my first Appleseed shoot with my .308 bolt action, and tried another shooter's AR-15 at 350 yards. The first ten shots I ever put out of an AR were all hits on the 20" steel plate at 350, again, no bipod or benchrest. It felt totally, completely awesome. Thanks THR for getting me there! :D

Today, I bought and then shot my first AR-15, a S&W M&P-15 Sport. Man I'm a happy boy! Also thanks to you guys, I sharpen and maintain the knives of everyone I know, and have spent way too much money on lovely blue Spydercos, thanks again Mr. JShirley! ;) Now my twin and I are having a blast teaching my mom and little brother to shoot too.

I'm sure I left out stuff, but you guys at THR (and Dave on the shotgun forums especially, that's where I first showed up on THR. I think he may have been the first guy to ever reply to me... RIP Dave, God bless!!) my whole family and even extended family has discovered shooting together, and without the respectful and generous support and help to me as a brand new gun guy, it could easily have never happened!

HUGE thanks to all you guys!!! Merry Christmas, and God Bless! :)

Done and done. Glad I won't have to clean out my PM's for a long time. I kept bouncing off that 500 limit. Now I have 10,000? Jeez!

Again, thanks guys.

so if I become a member does that mean I can say that's chicken poo-poo with out getting a warning? Hang on a second I just got a PM:scrutiny:

I would also like to say THANK YOU to the administrators and moderators of THR. Your efforts to run a tight ship are probably under-appreciated by many.

Wow - thanks for the well expressed sentiments.

In a way it's a shame that THR has to be a stand-in for the dad or grandfather or uncle who used to be the usual teacher/trainer/instructor for the young people in the family who needed to learn firearms safety, the finer points of shooting, the ethics of hunting, etc. But there's no doubt many of us here, staff and members alike, feel an obligation to fill the role of mentor as best we can, even at the distance and remove imposed by networked devices. For anyone out there who deeply feels the lack of a family member to show you the ropes, please let me suggest you order yourself a copy of Robert Ruark's The Old Man And The Boy to help fill that hole in your heart (http://www.amazon.com/The-Old-Man-Robert-Ruark/dp/080502669X).

It's been clear for a long time that THR would not be what it is without the host of members who give of themselves so freely and share their time, knowledge, patience and talent with the community. Thank you!

Interesting you bring that up, Fred.

My father shot himself in the head when I was a young boy (7 years old). No one else in my family was "in to" guns except my uncle; who died from a firearms accident a few years ago (that was actually documented on THR, and I'll be bringing it up again on the anniversary of his death next week to remind people again about safety...)

When it came to guns I had to "learn it all myself", just like I did everything else in life. I found a local mentor, an old Jewish gentleman from Israel (with some real interesting tattoos...), who was in to long range shooting, and he took me under his wing for a few years to teach me the ropes. He had a .. unique perspective on things.

He and I drifted apart after awhile. Since then the only "go to" resources I've had have really been on the internet and in books. Plus practice. And, starting this year, "real training" - I've sat in classes 72 hours this year, and another 8 to go on Saturday (getting chief RSO certified).

But yeah, the membership and experience level on this board really do turn in to that "mentor" for guys like me. When there's no one to turn to, to get questions answered, I always know I can fire up the laptop and make a post here, and 99.9999% of the time get a well qualified answer quickly.

This board is a definitive go-to for shooters old and new, and compared to other forums I've been on, it's absolutely a class act.

Done and done. Glad I won't have to clean out my PM's for a long time. I kept bouncing off that 500 limit. Now I have 10,000? Jeez!

Again, thanks guys.
Oh heck yea. It comes with more PM space? Im in:)

Im with Trent, thanks very much.

I would as well. I got into guns just a couple (few?) years ago, and this was the only board I checked out where the members didn't treat me like I was feeble because I'm a woman. I love that I can choose threads that are just about guns and shooting, without having to wade through political or philosophical debates. And I appreciate the members depth of knowledge, the intelligence and the ability to communicate so clearly in a challenging media. I appreciate the neutral moderation and that people of different belief systems and lifestyles are welcome. My time is precious and I never feel like the time that I spend on here has been wasted.

Merry Christmas!
