Well most who have ever browsed the revolving rifle showcase at Wal-Mart are sure to have noticed the Mossberg 702 Plinkster. Its the lowest priced gun they sell. I bought one almost 4 years ago when I was 19, and paid around $90 bucks out the door. I believe it sells for just over $100 now.
It is the true definition of a "beater/expendable" rifle because of its low price. Nonetheless, looking back at its service with me, I have become fond of my little 702 Plinkster.
I have shot box after box of federal bulk ammo in it to the point it singed my skin if I contacted the barrel. And cleaning the rifle, I never knew the word until this past week, when it refused to eject rat-shot rounds reliably. For 4 1/2 years!, I sh&t you not, I must of shot well over 5000 rounds without cleaning the damn gun once! Looking back, I treated it like complete sh&t, but nonetheless it always went bang.
Since the instruction manual lacks the directions to disassemble the gun, I learned from some forum a few days back. The sole reason, I even bothered to learn was to make it reliably eject and chamber rat shot 22lr. Their was so much damn grime, dirt, soot, etc embedded, that I soaked all the parts in GooGone and solvent using a toothbrush to aid the removal. Then I hosed the parts & did it again, after which using a air compressor to dry it. I lubed it, put it back together and let it rest for the night.
Well today, I set up some cans in my backyard and laid down 6 topped off magazines with the last 2 loaded with rat-shot on my bench. I took aim with the cocked&locked rifle & proceeded to spray&pray (aka quickly plink) the cans tactically reloading the topped off magazines 1 by 1 until they were all empty. All was fine and dandy until I came to the last two magazines loaded with rat-shot and had to continually re-rack the bolt as I heard click multiple times throughout.
So now that the 702 Plinkster is looking pretty, all cleaned up, it still refuses to reliably eject 22 rat-shot. But that's alright since I now place the blame on RAT-SHOT not being able to cycle through a semi-auto.
Throughout reading this little ramble of mine, In the end, I strongly recommend & respect the 702 Plinkster from Wal-Mart for its durability as well as reliability. Because of its price, Ya won't be afraid to let it get thrown around in your truck, and dropped on the ground as I have done multiple times. Just like the almighty Chevy Z71 pick up, its like a Rock!
And p.s. on Mossbergs International site, it seems that they make a version with a frikkin big ass muzzle brake! I mean *** is that things purpose on a little 22lr. However I must say, it does look pretty damn badass & extremely tactiCOOOOL!
