well my cousin who never owned guns before went and bought 2 hi-point 9mms. we went to the range and i took one look at them and couldn't help but grin. he said the guy at the gunshow who sold them to him said they don't jam. every 8 round mag we shot through each gun had 3 or 4 malfunctions. will these guns "break in" and work better after several hundred rounds?

i told him he could have bought a ruger 9mm with two 15 round mags. i have shot over 100,000 rounds(over 15 years) through my ruger 9mm with 1 malfunction early on and it wasn't even that bad of a malfunction. i just hit the slide and the round went in.

I have a hi-point 9mm. I have only put about 500 rounds through it and it's only jammed once or twice. Mine was only $100 :D I did notice that was easy to put the bullets in the magazine a little cockeyed, that might be your problem.

I had a buddy experience the same thing, fortunately the gun broke down all together before he finished the box of Ammo. The slide jammed part way back.

He took it back in to the Store and they Replaced it. Next weekend we took out the replacement and the extractor broke after about 20 rounds. (The range is behind the store)

We took that one back and the dealer offered another in it's place... My friend declined. The Dealer refunded him the cost of the gun PLUS the cost of 2 boxes of 9mm. Next time we stopped by that store, there weren't any Hi Points in the display case.... My Friend bought a Glock.

"Interesting that he went from no firearms to 2 of the same gun.. why ? Was one intended for his wife or something ? Otherwise that seems odd."

one for his wife and one for his truck i think. he should let his wife have the 1911 it actually kicks less than those 9mm things.

everyone makes mistakes, has your cousin learned the lesson? :)

where's our local resident hi point advocate, tropical z? :D

They were only $150 a piece. Or maybe if one breaks in a shootout he can pull out the other one:) .

A friend of mine had one for a while. Same situation, he was new to shooting, and didn't have a lot of cash. It actually worked OK (for a highpoint) I guess, I think he only had 2 or 3 jams out of 500 rounds. Someone at the range offered him $80 for it (He paid $110 for it) and he jumped on it, and bought a used S&W revolver with the money that same day.

+1 on the Ruger comment. If you look around you can buy a new Ruger P95 for about $370 or a new Bersa Thunder 9 for about $300 or a Kel Tec P11 for $260. All are more reliable than a Highpoint. Sometimes it is better to wait and save up.

This is why you don't go to a gun show without an idea of exactly what you want, and exactly how much it's worth. And you never listen to anything a guy in a booth says, unless you're haggling with 'im. Your friend overpaid by at least $20 per gun (MSRP is $140, street price new is $120 to $130).

$150 for a Hi-Point?!?!

Sounds to me like someone got ripped off - in more ways than one... First of all, it's a Hi-Point. If it jams 3 or 4 times per magazine, then it's performing like expected IMHO.

Second, who the hell pays $150 for those things?! I dunno, maybe it's because I live in Ohio and they're made here - but when I bought one - brand new, 6 years ago - it was $99.99 NIB, OTD.

I sold mine to some jerk I worked with for $90.00 :D

i have a 9mm hi point that i bought to leave at my shop...its in a so-so part of town and the price is right that if it comes up missing i won't be heart broken...i've put 400-500 rds thru it and never had a failure of any kind...my son who is on a limited budget liked it enough to buy one himself to keep at his house (his other pistol is a beretta .32), he wanted something with more power than the .32, he's shot 300-400 rounds thru his with me at the range and has never had an issue...

...they are heavy and big for a 9mm but the price is okay and if your on a budget or want something that won't break your heart if it gets stolen, they are a good gun...

...the hi point forums have lots of info and it does come with a lifetime warranty, so tell your friend to call hi point and tell them whats happening...

I don't own a Hi-Point, my personal 9mm is a P89, but over the years I've read many many posts from Hi-Point owners that attest their guns are reliable and surprisingly accurate. No one argues a Hi-Point's cutting edge technology or ergonomic charm but they sing praises for the lifetime waranty and the customer service. I tend towards a reviewer who said Hi-Points are not junk guns, but they are as low as you would want to go on the quality scale. If I owned one (and I've thought about it just for the heck of it) I would shoot it and keep after Hi-Point until I got a good working example (and likely a small collection of extra magazines thrown in) As has been pointed out, it won't break your heart if it gets stolen, some 90% of the BGs run away if they see you have a gun of any sort, and if you do use it on a BG, the police will likely confiscate it so you won't really cry when do. Thankfully my finances and situation don't force me to consider a Hi-Point as a first and only choice. But if they did, I would buy one and work it until I could count on it.

Oh - $150, even by California standards seems pretty steep for a Hi-Point

Local dealer sells these guys for $100. There's also a written banner, buy one get one free. so if that guy bought two, he could've come home with four instead! :D

I actually haven't even seen a hi-point in person, and believe me I've been haunting all the shops in a 2 hour radius for a long time now. They just don't seem to be sold in my area.

My brother was considering one because of the price. He already has a Ruger. I let him borrow my Bersa .380 and my Beretta 92.

I saw a few when I renewed my CHL last year. I think some people got them solely due to the revolver restriction with Texas CHL's.

next time for $150

tellem' about the Star BM, 8 shot 9mm, a big step up from HP, and parts & mags are still around. (now at CDNN-I don't work for them, but they do have nice prices{P22 right now for $189})

I bought a Hi-Point 9mm a couple of years ago to see if they were as bad as "everyone" says they are. I can't speak for anyone else's but mine is pretty darn good. I lost count a long time ago, but it's right around 2,000 rounds, and it's malfunctioned maybe a half dozen times. It puts the holes in the paper right about where I planned for them to show up.

All in all pretty decent for $150.00 IMHO. And yes, I paid $150.00 for it. That's the MSRP, or at least it was when I bought it. Money well spent.

BTW. Most of the problems reported on the Hi-Point board are related to the really cheap magazine. If Hi-Point would make a better magazine, a lot of their problems would be solved, but I've read/heard the same thing said about Kimber's too.

And yes there is a Hi-Point board.

Not as big a step as you think. I haven't been able to make my Star BM work right since I got it a couple of years ago. I haven't got the money to pay a gunsmith. I suppose I could send it in for warranty? Oh, wait. I can't. Some improvement...

I always wonder why people complain about problems with their Hi-Points instead of sending them in under the unconditional everlasting warranty. You know, this one:

All Hi-Point Firearms carry a Lifetime, No-Questions Asked Warranty.
If any Hi-Point Firearm is ever need of service, please call 877-425-4867
Whether you are the original purchaser, or a third-hand owner, your Hi-Point firearm will be repaired free of charge.

For $150 (more like a hundred bucks, most places) you're getting an American-made firearm with a warranty unmatched by anyone else that I know of. Never heard of Kimber sending out a brand new gun because the old worn-out one was sent in. How much do those cost, again?

I've heard that the jamming problems are caused by the magazine feed lips being bent out of spec. Try bending 'em in and out a little and see if that helps - or just send 'em in under warranty! Two guys at Hi-Point registered at a forum somewhere to provide Q&A support - this was one of the Qs they A'd. :D

Yes, they're ugly as sin, and no, they're not made to last - but most people who own 'em (I don't, but wouldn't mind picking one up as a plinker) seem to be happy with 'em and you can't argue with the warranty. Those two guys were real nice fellas, too. I'd give 'em my money if the dealers around here didn't ding the prices up.

...and, yeah, I've heard the Star BMs are largely unreliable, but without the benefit of an awesome warranty. Not really a step up, 'cept in materials.

My Hi-Point was $150, but it was the .45 and the guy threw in two boxes of ammo. It's worked flawlessly. $150 for a 9mm Hi-Point would make me cry. As others have stated, most of the problems encountered with a Hi-Point can be attributed to the magazine. I wish the manufacturer would put a little more attention to detail to that. Maybe use a heavier gauge steel for the magazine. That would add how much weight to the gun?

I'm holding a S&W .45 pistol for my brother in law and have carried it on my hip a few times. I'm amazed at how heavy it is and that my Hi-Point is lighter. My usual carry gun is a Kel-tec P11.

If something doesn't work on a Hi-Point, just keep sending it back, just like you would for any manufacturer. It's highly unlikely you'[ll get two lemons in a row.

I had a hi-point 9mm I
bought it used for $ 90.00.
It came with two magazines
one of the magazines worked
and the other one would jam.
I sold it to a guy I worked
with for $ 60.00
