The 5.7, Lions, Tigers and Bears...Oh my

I sent an e-mail to the deputy chief asking how a souped up .22 magnum could bring down big game like lions, tigers, and bears. Also, isn't it illegal to hunt tiger due to them being on the endangered species list? His response back to me was this;

Mr. TOTC,

I have no idea what you are talking about.

Mike

It's been said that politicians are like diapers, they should be changed often and for the same reason, I'd submit LAPD deputy chiefs be added to that list.

Fabrique National 57, an assault pistol used to kill big game

Haven't the anti's been insisting that assault pistols and rifles are only meant for one thing.....to kill people?

I'm thinking that one of their prerequisites has to be the ability to master definition metamorphosis.:scrutiny:

Of course, now that he's classified it as a hunting firearm it should be protected from any future bans.

I sent an e-mail to the LA Daily News and Sue Doyle and pointed out the many errors and omissions that she made on the FN57 story. I also pointed out that the LAPD far outgunned the BG's with weapons that would have been beyond, I am sure, the Deputy Chief Moore's level of knowledge to describe. I can only imagine how he would describe Desert Eagle .50 cal =====most likely as an anti tank / anti aircraft weapon.
IMO, Editors that allow articles to be published by writers such as Ms. Doyle are the main reason that many of our major newspapers have seen their readership plummet or in some cases have gone out of business. The Palm Beach Post saw their daily distribution and sales nose dive after the past presidential campaign. The newspaper was forced to reorganize and lay off several hundred people on their staff. This was caused mostly by their very biased support of Obama and their daily slamming of Bush. I believe the average person will no longer overlook poorly written or biased news articles and now show their displeasure by not purchasing/viewing the newspaper or watching the news station/channel. I cancelled my subscription to the Palm Beach Post after taking it for nearly thirty years. I have not received a reply from the LA Daily News nor from Ms. Doyle.

Sorry that I got long winded.

And that about sums it up, doesn't it? :)

Dang, I guess I will have to bring my Single-Six with the .22 WMR cylinder if I ever go to Africa.

I guess my .30-06 must be made to shoot down a space shuttle while its in orbit.

Seriously though, i'm sure the FN Five-Seven could kill a lion or a tiger or a bear, and I'm sure that if I had to use one to do so I would really come to appreciate the 20 round magazine.

The death star had a .500 Action Express.

Seriously though, the guy was just playing to the audience there in Cali. Im sure he had no idea at the time that someone intellegent would throw a flag on his ignorance. Thats a 15 yard penalty, repeat first down.

Lions tigers and bears? Dorothy could have used one of these then I guess?

And *** IS AN ASSAULT PISTOL!? Are you kidding me?
It must have one of those barrel shrouds. You know; the shoulder thingy that goes up?

The .22 Hornet, significantly more powerful than the 5.7 is not considered suitable for most deer size game. It can be done with perfect shots, but is still considered inhumane as the chance for wounding is high.

The .223/5.56 is even more powerful and barely considered suitable for deer in some states. Being prohibited in others.

Both use heavier bullets, the same diameter, at higher velocities than the 5.7x28.

You need not imagine, we have it on record recently as well:

The handgun round, weaker than most rifles or shotguns, manages to
"blow a hole the size of a Mack truck through a person," said Leigh Winchell, regional chief of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=460578

Which seems consistent. If a .22 is good for killing large dangerous game, then the .50 caliber pistol launches projectiles that expand to larger than a Mack Truck, blowing a hole through a person that is several times larger than the person themselves.

Just imagine if these guys did gun reviews:
Every shot is like a small nuclear explosion going off in front of your face. Launching projectiles near the speed of light, creating holes the size of Mack trucks in whatever is in your cross hairs!
This is one insane weapon of mass destruction.

well, we're probably going to need more of these 5.7 things then, with all the people getting lions in our cities.

dude, you can get past a dog..... nobody effs with a lion!!!

OMG!!.. It's soo simple to see.. 57 is a lot bigger than 9, or 30 which means it is more dangerous.. Soo..... oh.. There's a decimal point in between 5 and 7?

Add this to the 5.7's infamous armor penetrating capabilities (which are a hair overhyped even if you have the no longer for sale ammo).

We'll see 5.7 banned by 2012...

This is the response I posted to the column:

"The real questions this should raise are:

1) If a DEPUTY POLICE CHIEF doesn't know enough about a simple hangdgun to be able to talk about them correctly, why is he allowed to hold any job with the police?

2) If he DOES know what he's talking about and he's just grandstanding before the media to raise scare tactics, what does that tell you about the integrity of your police administration?"

Hey guys, I've had a really crappy day... you've just brightened it up a little with this thread, especially Zoogster! :p

The 5.7mm round has a comparatively large muzzle velocity when compared to other handgun rounds. It comes in around 2.3k FPS (depending on the ammo).

The initial design (SS192 5.7mm round) was to defeat body armor - having a steel penetrator and aluminum core, but not even our own ATF has recognized it as such.

It does penetrate certain body armor (Level 1/2), but the round comes up short in total penetration depths (fails the FBI depth of 12").

Did you get that from the Extreme Shock guys? LOL

http://www.extremeshockusa.com/

From their website

The World's First "Smart" Munitions - Shaped Charge Performance with Intelligent Penetration Characteristics
The ExtremeShock Explosive Entry round is the world's first "smart" small arms munition. It fragments in logamarithmic proportion to the hardness of the target it strikes.

Sounds good, since it's logarithmic and all......
