When a guy buys his first gun, the the 3rd thing he should buy, right after a box of ammunition is a set of "gun screw drivers!":)

And I thought for guns you buy tack drivers. :neener:

LOL. :D

Yeah, it's a tough job, but someone's gotta do it (on occasion).

I just traded a Sig 230 for a 642, it just cariies more easily. Took it to the range last night and was very pleased with the recoil and accuracy. At 7-10yds putting them all in a fist sized area was a nice surprise. The Federal 110gr low recoil rounds were particularly accurate.

I'am really surprised at how accurate
my 642-2 has gotten. The trigger was
pretty rough when new but it's now
quite smooth but a little heavy. The
best group so far at 10 yards is 1.3"
I had to take my time, stage the trigger
and focus.I was using Federal classic
125gr JHP +P's.

I just saw on another board where a member bought a 642, posted all excited about it, shot it, and is now selling it.

Read that post myself. He didn't even give the 642 a fighting chance...

New member here.

Anyway, I carry a Sig 229 everyday, but I just picked up a new 642.

Can't wait to get it to the range.

Cheers.

Tried the Hogues for the first range session, and while they feel great, they give up way too much concealability, totally eliminating pocket carry. If its gonna be on my belt with a big ole grip, might as well be my G26 with 12rd mags or my G19...

So I picked up a Pachmyar compac (I think thats what it is). Covers the backstrap nicely, and gives a full hand grip, but still allows for pocket carry, in most of my pants. Hopefully it will feel great shooting as well.

here's a quick pic, please excuse the gross floor, my maid has the, uh, week off...;)

the hogues I have are they full grip conversion thingy, so its a good 1"-1.5" longer than the factory boot grips. The Pacs are longer, but only about a pinky's width so, and the smooth, rounded profile and less sticky rubber aid in concealability.

Got it. I went to the range today and tried both grips, and the Pachmayr definitely take the sting out, but not enough to give up on concealment, so I'm back to the hogues. The Pachmayrs are nice though.

I'm back in the club!

I had gun money burning a hole in my pocket real bad. I wanted everything from a .308 semi-auto battle rifle to a .22 target pistol. I had to look at what was important to me right now. I had a 642 that I sold to what42 over ayear ago. My daughter was about six months onld then and IWB carry wasn't too hard considering she was not even crawling then. Now, I have to chase her everywhere. I am constantly bending over to either pick her up, take things from her or give her things. As much as I love my G19, it is just not the right gun for that sort of thing. It will remain my primary CCW when I am either alone or with my wife out on the town but, I need to go back to pocket carry when I have Macie with me. I looked at other guns but the 642 is the best compromise of power and size.

Flip.

Buffalo Bore 125 +P

Alright fellow 642'ers. I just ordered a couple of boxes of the Buffalo Bore 125 +P Gold Dot LV hollow points.

http://www.buffalobore.com/ammunition/default.htm#38spl

Has anyone here ever shot any of this stuff in the newer +P rated 642's?

I have a few boxes of the .38 Speer 135 +P GDHPs and was just looking for something with a little more ummph but now I am worried about shooting the 642 loose.

Thoughts?

Thanks

Don

I would not use them as a practice
round but firing a few to get the
feel for them should be fine.I've
ordered the Black hills version of
theis load.They're not quite as
fast as the BB's,they clocked 975
fps from a 2" model 60 so they will
be easier on my 642-2.At 18 bucks
per 50 they're easier on the wallet.

Thanks bpisler, firing just a few was my plan. I figure two boxes will last me a couple of years. I destroyed a nickle S&W 37 by overdoing the +P fodder. It was an older 1980 model not rated +P. I had seen the Black Hills stuff but couldn't find out if they used the LV Gold Dot bullet.

I was carrying Proload 125 +P TacLite .357mag rounds in my 340PD because of the excessive recoil with normal .357 ammo and from what I have read, the Proload and the Buffalo Bore use the same 125gr Low Velocity Gold Dot bullet which I have tested and really like. From what I have read, from a 2" barrel, the Proload .357 ammo clocks around 1075 and the BB 125 +P 1050.

With the 642 weighing 3oz more than the 340PD and the .38 round traveling 25fps slower, recoil should be less than what I was used to with the 340.

Thanks

Don

My wife has a 642 that she loves.

But.... she had me put target grips on it, to soften the recoil!
Talk about an odd looking gun. :barf:

Anyway, I want one of my own.
(And this is post number 642. That means I should get one today, don't you think?)

So, the 642 weighs around 15 ounces empty. (S&W website)

I've read that replacing the grips with the Bantam grips shaves 1 ounce, is that correct?

Just a quick aside, my snubby has a pretty interesting rattle when loaded. I shook it all about, and it seems the shells in the cylinder are going back and forth, causing the noise (like from the chamber, and moving back a few 1/100s to the frame), is this normal?
