Those are Kim Ahrends' square conversion, if it's a round butt 686, and likely made of cordia wood. They may run $60 or $70 + $6 s/h. He also has a 'retro-target' style that is more flat/squared at the back of the bottom. Below are both in cocobolo and without finger grooves, the bottom (696 - an L-frame) is the square conversion with Ahrends standard finis, the top (617 - a K-frame) is the retro-target delivered unfinished and after a few coats of an oil finish. K/L frames are the same - you just need to know whether you have a round butt or a square butt gripframe.

Here is my picture, one more time, of my 'perfect', at least for me, 686+ - a 5" Stocking Dealer Exclusive. It came stock as shown - with the same type of Ahrends grip, just having finger grooves.

I just joined the 686 club. My first revolver purchased at a dealer for $300. 686-3 4" barrel hardly shot. Born Dec 1989.

First Timer x2

Just purchased my first revolver; 686+ 4". I'm looking forward to shooting it this Friday! Also just joined THR; I can't get over all the information found here. I'm honored to be surrounded by some great gun enthusiasts. Looking forward to learning a lot!

Just purchased my first 686-3. Have not shot it yet but it sure has a smooth trigger.

Two times a member

I have two 686s, a 6 inch that I got about 12 years ago and have shot quite a bit over the years, and a 2.5 inch that I just got, shown below:

Hey Jake,

This thread is for 686 lovers, not sellers. Keep the 686, sell the 657.

Or if you insist, I'll give ya $300 for the 686, shipping included:D

Seriously, in excellent condition, $450 - 500. Good luck.

One of my many 686's

Man, there are some good looking revolvers in this thread. I need a 586/686 to go along with my 17 with 4" full lugged .22lr.

Came across this at the gunshop yesterday, pre-lock, great condition, great price (IMO) and it came home with me. I'm shopping for some wood grips for it.

I had one of the first 586's they made in 6 inch. I can KICK myself for selling it. I really miss that pistol. Was super smooth and accurate.

I am now a member of this club. I have been looking for a full size 357 revolver and had narrowed it down to a 686 or a GP100. The day after I decided to get one I went into my local shop and they had two 686 plus for sale. One was a -6 and the other a -4 with a trigger job, both with the 4 inch barrel which is what I was interested in. It was also $120 less. It was there on consignment from a regular customer so I felt comfortable picking it up.

Nothing fancy about it. Other than the trigger job it is a stock 686-4 plus with the original hogue S&W grips. The trigger job smoothed out the double action but did not seem to do much with the single action. That suits me just fine.

Thanks for all of the previous posts with aftermarket grips. It gives me a good direction to go now.

WJR, From what I can tell, its a first generation, there's no dash after it, inside the frame it just says Mod. 686 then M under it. I've done some asking and reading, and it appears to be a first gen. with the M meaning it was sent in to S&W to be modified when they were recalled.

For me, the ultimate 686+ will always be the Mtn Gun.

I did have another 4" 686+ but, the Mtn Gun just handles, points, carries, and shoots SOOO much better!

I do need to find a nice set of decorative grips for it...
