The $99 .22 at Dick's Sporting Goods

I have one of the 702's. It's not a bad gun if you use the right ammo. I got the one with the cheap 4x scope, and it's pretty friggin' accurate.

If it is a Junkster pass on it and go for a Marlin 60 or Ruger 10/22 you will be much happier in the long run.

I've got a Marlin 60,Ruger 10/22,and a Mossy Plinkster.
For the $98 OTD at wallyword,with a $29 Tasco 30mm
red dot,it is the "funnest/cheapest" gun in the house.
I've had some problems with the last batch of Federal
bulks,then tried Win ammo. Ran 100% on Win. bricks.
You might not "hit the tack",but 3 rounds later the tack
has nothing to "hold on too".
For cheap fun,get one,a nice red dot "speeds things up".
Ive got many .22's,the 702 burns more ammo then most.

Get yourself a Weatherby Mk XXII You can pick one up for around $350. They're real pretty and shoot like crap.
I know, I own 2.

The 801 "Half-Pint" is based on the 802 bolt-action.

The 802 is a decent bolt action, but, the "half-pint" is TINY!! it has a 16" barrel and a shortened stock. This is a gun for a small person or an 8-year-old.

It is a much safer design than some other "starter" rifles out there.

A lot of folks that don't like the Mossberg 702 (semis) or 802 (bolt-actions) have never held or fired one, I've bought 3 of them over the past few years, they are very reliable, accuracy is pretty good for an $100 rifle.

The only thing that I don't like is the trigger, but it's no worse than the any 10/22 that I've tried....

FWIW, the 802 bolt-action triggers are very good...

I bought a 709 Plinkster at WalMart about a year ago for $98 along with a BSA 3-7 variable scope for $14.95. Wanted a cheap .22 to teach the kids with. Let's just say I wasn't expecting much from this gun. Boy was I wrong.

Have had much fun with this cheapo gun. Zeroed in the scope right and now get 3/4" groups at 30 yards and <1.5" at 100 yards. What's nice is the recoil is zero so once you get on target, the other shots can be semi-rapid fired right on. Impresses the heck out folks when a spent shotgun shell is made to dance a football field away. Guess I got a good one. It's had over 7 550 round bricks of cheap Federal ammo through it with no serious problems. They DO need to get cleaned well after about 300 rounds or will start to occasionally FTE.

It is hard to go wrong with a 10/22 - this was my first rifle and it is still going strong. It won't shoot CCI Stinger ammunition, but that is explained in the manual.

I'm sure there are folks here near where you live that would be happy to shoot with you on their equipment if you decide to save up for the extra $100 for a different rifle but it will take most / all of the summer to do so.

Good luck and be safe no matter what you do!

I shot a Mossberg Plinkster 702 the other day.

Things I liked;

Inexpensive--- about $100.00
Extended magazine release
bolt hold open feature
fully adjustable rear sight
free floated barrel
very accurate

Things I don't like;
gritty trigger

The Plinkster has some features that the 10/22 has available as after market products; mag release, bolt hold open,accuracy.

I have heard that it resembles a Marlin only with a detachable mag instead of a tube magazine.

for $100.00 without the need to add after market parts it makes a great little gun.
