The French Shotguns in those nice cases with all of the other kit reminds me of old guitars and other musical instruments that you can find with cases sort of like that. Rarely that high end with all of the intricate fitted sections.

I enjoyed that pic and all of the others:) Thanks for taking the time to put together the pics and info. It does look like a great museum.

helmets, axes, yatagans ... and lotsa swords from the turks, mamelukes, germans, italian-citystates and so on. All embedded into a giant museum
full of big paintings ilusttrating important battles in their history.

Considering the turks even had their own warrior-caste till modern times
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janissary
it´s not at all surprising they are proud people.
1000 years of military history speak for itself.

Absolutely beautiful, they really knew how to take a gun and make it beautiful without gaudy. Thanks for taking the time to post all these, I have a light that matches one of the revolvers with silver handgrip.

plus a katana given to the sultan by the Tenno.
( ... the pic does it no justice .... majestic sword...)

Last but not least, one of the 4 35cm coastal guns that defended
the Dardanelles in WW1. (made by Krupp/Essen, germany.)

Hope u enjoyed the ride!

Did you get picks of the famous Ottoman bombards and enormous breach-loading artillery from their glory days? I've read some of those were made to fire BOULDERS.

hm? :D

the breech loaders from KRUPP are in the pic 3 posts above.

The pic on Galata Tower is nice. How'd it feel looking across the golden horn? Lots of history there. Truly a place where east and west meet. Going to the Hagia Sophia? Have you seen the Walled Column? For some reason I have always associated a certain... awe... or something with the city formerly known as Constantinople. The history has always fascinated me and for some reason for me it's one of those places I HAVE to see in my life.

I think it was something I read about the walls of the city and the great chain stretched across the golden horn. IIRC there was a fellow and his army attacking the city and with the chain up went miles around the city with their boats/ships (overland) to take the city by water.

Wild Stuff. Thanks for sharing.

funny enough the folks i´m gonna meet in a few hours left south central KY today to come here :)

Letcher cty?

Belive me .. the awe is there. This is where knowledge transfer really started.
We germans still would be sitting in trees without Istanbul.
Overlooking this GIANT city with all it´s water, historic buildings
and the geography ... you know this is one of the few important places of civilization.

Thanks for that bronze bombard--that's the kind I was thinking of.

I wonder, was there much on the Dardanelles campaign? I've seen various "enfausers" and hybrid rifles circulating stateside from that period.

Man, I never thought Id ever say this, but I kinda miss Turkey. I went to that museum and many others during my two and a half years at Incirlik Air base. Fascinating country and people.

@Cosmo

There wer lotsa Mausers and Enfields ... and quite a few Frankensteins
made by the turkish gunmakers. The Martini, M-peabody and the Mauser seemed
their favorite base to make those monsters from :)

Letcher is over on the eastern side of the state, but it does go to show it is a small world sometimes.

Thinking of all the history there, it is literally piled on top of itself. The Hippodrome... all the cicterns around the city... it really is mind boggling.
