Note to JUBO...

hey JUBO, i now have two handguns mounted with hubble type scopes:

Taurus 970 Tracker .22 LR

Ruger .22/45

they get a little on the top heavy side, but all that glass sure helps out bad eyes! i am a little disapointed in the TrueGlo 2X42mm red dot on the Taurus due to some qualities of the projected red dot. however, it does group at 15 yards at about 2" or so. not bad FOR ME for a two power.

the Simmons on the Ruger is worth its weight in gold, this gun shoots like a laser!!! i have taken to replacing my rifle with this handgun for squirrel hunting in the mountains - Eric

I have two handguns in .22 cal. My Dad gave me a Ruger standard .22 when I was 16 yrs old. When I was 40 I picked up a Colt Diamondback .22, ( 6" ). Like most, anytime I go to the range, the .22s go with me. If I'm at the rifle range I always take a .22 with me. I'll shoot ten times as much rimfire ammo, rifle or pistol...can't beat the price! Can't beat the fun!
Mark.

I think the real joy is buying an $89 case of 5000rds of ammo and having it be the most accurate stuff you shoot. I guess I better get back to the shop and buy the other case since PMC ammo isn't going to be around.

A Marvel conversion lets me shoot daily when I cannot afford anything else.

I only have one .22 handgun of my very own, a S&W Mod. 17 w/6 in. bbl. I use this to start up novice shooters with their first trip to the range. Works real well at building shooter confidence with low recoil, excellent sights and superb accuracy. My wife has a S&W 422 Target w/4 1/2 bbl.

-S&W 22A w/5.5" slab side barrel and red dot sight (tack-driver @ 50 yards, favorite target gun)
-H&R Sportsman Double Action revolver (very accurate, very easy to use, I take it hiking and camping anywhere I legally can)

I love .22s because they put the lead where I want it to go, I can shoot them quicker with better accuracy, ammo is lightweight, and no matter how broke I am I can always find enough change under the sofa cushions to buy a box of ammo. :D

Baphomet , that's a GORGEOUS :what: pistol. If you don't mind me askin, How much does a custom getup like that run a guy?
Wow, absolutely gorgeous.

Have I shown these off before?

Top one Ruger Mk1 Target that will one day be mine, the bottow one is a Mk 2 dear old dad bought me for Christmas when I was 17.

Dad's has grips that look like Volquartsen but he's said for years that he 'made' them... maybe he finished them from a kit? Not sure. Mine are cocobolo made by American Gripcraft of Tuscon AZ in the mid 80's.

Lately dad has been jonesing for a Mk 3 Hunter and eyeing High Standards at gun shows... me? I'd love to own one of those waspish Colt Woodsmans.

I don't mind you asking about the price at all, but too be honest with you, I'm not sure, exactly, how deep dollar-wise I am into it. Some questions are best left unanswered. The whole package was done piecemeal over a period of about two years: an extended mag release one month, an extended slide-release the next, and a splurge buy one year (from a particularly nice tax refund) for the Volquartsen upper. Overall this was a project pistol, really, that I did for fun. The Redfield red-dot was a sight I'd had for years that was simply looking for a home. A lot of people ask about the grips in particular, so here you go: they were made by Turner Custom and while I don't recall what I paid for them, they're easily worth twice whatever paid.

If you want to squeeze that kind of accuracy out of a factory MKII/III the key components are the Volquartsen upper (about $260 (going by memory)) a good trigger kit, like the ones from Clark or Volquartsen and CCI Mini Mag hollow points.

First Handgun: Iver Johnson Trailsman 66, 1961. A real POS. Traded for a Ruger Single Six in 1962.

Currenty own:
1st Model Colt Woodsman Sport circa 1935
3rd Model Colt Woodsman Sport
(2) Ruger .22 Auto Standard models, one 99% w/wood checkered grips and no warning label.
Ruger Mark II .22/45
Ruger Mark III .22/45 fixed sights(terrible trigger pull)
S&W 17 w/6" barrel
Mrs. has Browning Buckmark w/ 4" bbl and a Colt Ace.

Favorite for knocking around is the Mark II, but not convenient to carry. Had high hopes for the Mark III with 4" bbl, but the trigger pull is rough, gritty, and heavy. Currently packing the Ruger Standard w/4" bbl and plastic grips for ground squirrels.

Coyote, I surprised that your MKIII trigger is rough. A little touching up with something like a VQ sear and possibly a trigger would fix all that for a few bucks.

To Big G

Hey Big G, thanks alot, i had to go and buy a new keyboard for the puter. That Diamondback made me drool all over the old one and shorted it out. its my dream to some day get one, im VERY jealous! they're VERY expensive so i gotta wait till the kids leave home, that will be my gift to myself for not killin them over the years :D -Eric

I plan on adding to it, of course. First is a nice set of grips. Then a VQ trigger group. Then a better dot. That's probably it... I'm not a good enough shot to warrant the full-blown treatment.

It is a joy, yes! I haven't had it long but it gets a lot of use and honestly, I look forward to shooting it more than anything else... really brings out the perfectionist in me... can't compensate with bigger bullet holes :D

If I can get my groups consistently to the size of a quarter at the same range as Baphomet with his dime, I would be ecstatic. More likely a half dollar lol....

This is my vary first purchase, and only so far. I just am getting started.

Ruger Super Six in SS, I paid $150 for it used. How do I find the year it was made? I want more .22's, I want a semi-auto pistol and rifle, but looking for cheap since I am cheap :neener:

I wouldn't mind an 8+ shot .22 revolver. Are there speed loaders made for those? Can't remember who makes what, but I think I've seen 8 shots. Are there 9 or 10 shot revolvers out there? Might be almost as much fun plinking with one of those with several speed loaders at the ready as it is with my Match Target (for which I just acquired my 3rd and 4th magazines):)

The Gun I wanted when I was 16

What a lot of fun this little thing is:

Walther P22 - small but not to small, accurate like you would not believe, recoil is pleasant - perfect for gun shy people like wifes and kids.

Double action/single action with external hammer - totally reliable with copper plated bullets. Feeds everything from normal to hot CCI Stingers.

Very lightweight - you don't mind having it on your belt all day, but not too toylike.

The magazine release makes it the perfect training pistol for slap, rack, bang drills for the larger HK USP series.

And all that for $300.

.22 rock...I love picking up the WAllmart special, 550 rnds of Rem for a little over $10. Wouldn't mind a .22 handgun at all, very cool.

If I can get my groups consistently to the size ... as Baphomet with his dime...
Hey FTF; don't wantcha thinkin' I could pull off a grouping like that offhand. LOL... In my dreams, maybe.

That target was shot while being "lightly rested" (i.e. wrists supported) and checking for zero. On the other hand even the "flyer" in that group was called. That MKII will punch out a single hole at that range with that ammo if I can manage to do my part.

Like most of you, my favorite plinker is a Ruger Mark II (or III). Also my HS Victor is one heck of an accurate plinker. I won't even go to Colts.... my favorites. Think I need to pick up a Smith 617 to shoot one of these days.

Would a 22, geared with 22lr ammo be an adequate personal defense(not so much) and coyote defense weapon? Not so much for my personal defense, bceause I don't have a CCL, and am only 15, but if I were to go hunting, would a 22lr stand up to coyotes and dogs well enough? When I am old enough, I plan on getting a CCL, my dad has one, and carreis a nifty little .380.:) it's nice. lol I'm not sure of the brand and model though.
