Can anyone tell me the difference between the The Marlin 1894C & 1894CS? I looked all over the net and can't find the answer. It's not on the Marlin site either.

I recently bought a used 1894C which turned out to be an 1894CS. It was manufactured in 1983 and has a 6 round tube instead of the current 9 round tube and has the older microgroove barrel too. I just can't find out what the difference is between the 2 rifles.

BTW, anyone who is on the fence and can't decide if they should buy a .357 Magnum lever gun or not, DO IT. This carbine is a lot of fun to shoot!!

As I recall, the 1894CP is was the ported 16 inch barrel model (not currently made.) When Marlin added the cross bolt safety (in the early '70s?) they added S to the model number to indacate it comes with a safety. They are now using S to mean Stainless Steel.

I think LaEscopeta has it right.

Early on the 'S' was for safety models. Now it is for stainless.

My carbine is an 1894 CP - 16" ported .357. (I could live without the ports)

A 1894 C should be a standard .357

An 1894 P is a ported .44

Fun is right though, my little carbine has a scout scope and is one fun little pea shooter.

I guess the "S" my 1894CS stands for Safety since 1983 was the year the changed the model to include the safety block. I'm sure my rifle was made in 1983 because I check the serial number.

If the barrel was Stainless it wouldn't be Blue on the outside and it is.

Thank you all for your help...
