the perfect 30-06 for hunting

The new M-70 in the Extreme weather stainless version is pretty tough to beat ! I love mine.

I own three hunting rifles. Two of which are lever actions becuase I just love lever actions. The one general purpose bolt aciton hunting rifle I own is a Rem 700 in 30-06. I went with the XCRII. It is designed for extreme weather. It is a stainless rifle that has some sort of polymer baked on coating (think Glock or XD) and comes with a synthetic rifle stock. I like it a lot. I think the MSRP ran about $1,000. I bought it before I had heard of all the talk about trigger issues which I'm not sure what to believe. I trust Col. Coopers 4 rules more than any mechanical safety. Had I heard of all of the trigger safety talk, I would have likely bought the equivalent model Winchester 70.

I have both the Tikka (in 270) and Win M70 in -06. Like them both a lot and use each about the same amount (hogs and deer). No doubt the M70 is prettier, more classic, feels better, and has features I really like (3 position safety, better action, and ability to load from the top). The Tikka is dead accurate with just about any ammo and I have no qualms about beating it up as it's bulletproof. Only problem with it is it's hard to love like I do the M70 due to the plastic feel. Tikka's are kind of like an ugly girlfriend - not much to look at but they function as well as the pretty ones and are more affordable.

No, go somewhere (Gander maybe?) where you can pick them all up and check out how they feel to YOU. What feels wonderful to others may feel awkward to you. Of the current-production bolt-action utility rifles available, I chose a Savage Hunter Series. YMMV.

My do everything rifle is a Remington 700 ADL in 308 with a Leupold VXII 2X7 in Weaver Mounts and rings. Great glass, lots of bullet choices, inexpensive. It is as capable a combination as I can ask for.

They all work. Whatever fits best will shoot best in the field. Mount the rifle to your shoulder with your eyes closed and a good cheek weld. When you open your eyes you should be looking through the sights or scope--or right down the mid-line of the barrel.

Length of pull is easily fixed. Drop at comb or heel is more of a problem if it's not righteous.

Don't worry about the looks. Forty years back I bought a Wby MkV in '06. It's made more than one unplanned venture down a hillside with me. I just figure they're honorable battle scars. :)

Today my Remington 700 BDL shot a 3/4 inch group. No group was greater than 1 5/16 inches. It is an out of the box, BDL stainless steel with a factory synthetic stock hunting rifle. Not that other won't shoot that well but I've had and have many rifles and never had a problem with a Remington 700 and they all shot really well out of the box.

My personal favorite 30-06 is my Savage 116 weather warrior, accustock & accutrigger, stainless finish. Any of the rifles you listed would serve you well, but I have a thing for the 550 American... Beautiful rifle.

I was in this same situation a while back, and I picked an FN made Winchester Model 70 Featherweight Deluxe, and couldn't be happier. Here's me and my baby!

This is Browning's model BLR. Real walnut for this piece. Outstanding balance and handling, too. Receiver is drilled and tapped for common scope mounts. Cost is higher than most plastic stocked bolt rifles but the BLR holds its used value BEST of all.

30-06 is a keeper!!

What kind of accuracy are you getting with your BLR. I am looking at one right now in a take down. I can't think of a more useable saddle rifle that one of those critters right there!

I'm just a bit worried about how well they shoot.

I shot my stainless/synthetic BLR this past weekend for the first time. I wish I had a scope on it already, but the sights are actually very usable. I was able to hit bowling pins out at 100yards with the sights alone. I was not shooting from a rest, so I think that was impressive. It impressed me at least.

Although it is not a takedown, it is of course a .270 Winchester.

I'm planning on using it in the cow hunt this next month, with no scope, but when I get around to scoping it, I'll definitely post in a past thread of mine about BLR accuracy and I'll copy the post in your thread about it too.

I shoot a browning eurobolt with iron sights and a quick release scope. I have shot two elk with iron sights and find it to be very satisfying. I highly recommend buy a bolt action rifle with iron sights just for the earlier mentioned reason that they are good back up. I love browning rifles but would definately shoot savage. I was shopping at a pawn shop for a 30-06 when I found my rifle. It is a .270 and I would confidently hunt anything on the continent with it.

I sight in for dead on at 150 yards. I'm shooting consistent 3.5 - 4.25 inch groups at this distance. This shoots the bulleye into bits after half box of ammo!

The BLR is a turn bolt action operated by a lever. No kidding.

In addition to the Model 70 the Ruger #1 is really nice too. It gives you a full 26" barrel in a rifle the length of a 22" bolt action. Accuracy is not record setting but plenty accurate enough for almost any hunting situation.
