The RUGER OLD ARMY Club

I Might Have Found The Load

I've been trying for months to work up an accurate load for my ROA using Doak's capsules and BH 209 powder. :banghead:

I started with a cast 255gr. RNFP and tried every mathematical way to get a good, accurate hunting load ... No dice.

Yesterday I may have found the "Philosopher's Stone'.
I used a 200 grain cast R.E.A.L. bullet with 20 gr. by weight of BH 209 and separated the bullet from the powder with a 1/8" felt wad lightly lubricated with Bore Butter. The bullets were lubed with Lyman's Black Powder Gold.

I shot a 4-shot 2" group with shots #2, 3, & 4 being 3/4". :D
It was shot at 35 yards from a sandbag. Shots #5 & 6 opened the group up to 4 1/2" due, I suspect, to a fouled barrel. No swabbing was done.

Pat it's good to hear someone using Doaks capsules,I was starting to wonder after all the hoopla, why is it so quiet? Hopefully more reports will start coming in.Good luck in your search for a good load.
robert

Pato: I thought you had trouble getting BH209 to ignite with primers and attempts to make it work by using a duplex created low velocities? Please go into detail on what you've done! I'm hoping to work on my own testing soon with capsules by Doak.

I only had 2 failures with the Rem. 7 1/2 primers out of over 100 rounds fired. Both were due to "operator error".
I never used a duplex load with primers. I tried a few duplex loads with percussion caps before using the capsules.

(I've explained this to you 3 times now. Please pay attention.)

Ok, it's been a week!

Where are you guys? No posts on the ROA Club Thread for a week!

Just to bring it back to the top, the lucky hatband my wife beaded for me and my antiqued ROAs helped me place first in Frontiersman category at our local club annual match.

Mainly I just wanted to brag on my wife's beading, but there isn't a hatband thread...

This is not loom work by the way, one bead at a time on a needle and thread. And, she's making me another one!!

I'll be updating the club list soon. Been under a rock the last couple of months but I'll crawl out soon to fix the list. :p

Can't post in the classified section, but I will as soon as I can get it to work.
Does anyone on the forum have an Ruger Old Army - SS - in very good condition
that they would like to sell for a fair price? I'm not looking for the deal of a lifetime,
just a good fair price.
Thanks - rme

SORRY SORRY
I did not notice the post limit before you can use the classified posting
section - THR ADMINISTRATION, I have tried to delete this post myself
but can't, would you please delete it for me ASAP.
Again I apologize.
Thanks - rme

ROA Timing

:(:(Hi
For background refer to posts #1103-1110 regarding the cylinder fitted to my ROA.
After firing it for several months I have come to the conclusion that the replacement cylinder is not correctly timed causing minute particles of very hot lead being "spat" out of the side cylinder/cone gap.
I shall be visiting Bob Dunkley to determine the fix but would be interested in comments from THR members.
I would be particularly interested to know if the problem is "fixable". Knowing that there are no replacement parts in the market place for the ROA. Would not like to condemn it to being a book end. Enjoy shooting it.

Yamavira.:(

Use that replacement cylinder as a pencil holder.

Watch the gun auction sites for a factory original percussion cylinder. They are advertised occasionally. It will be cheaper in the long run.

You could buy a whole ROA for what you could invest in getting that thing to work properly. I assume English laws still permit you to purchase a percussion revolver?

RugerOldArmy1977.jpg

Here is my Ruger Old Army. It is a 1977 vintage that I was able to purchase from a friend about a year ago. It's in overall good shape with only one nipple rounded. So far I've just loaded five chambers and it shoots just fine that way.

The photo itself was a collaborative effort of the FOML Club photographer and my good friend and shooting mentor Phil, both of whom are technologically more advanced than I am.

Welcome gifford! :D Nice pic!

I have an Ruger Old Army I would like to sell. The problem is I dont know what it is worth. So I came here for your help.First off it is in bad condition. The forcing cone is badly pitted and the barrel as well. The cylinder has lite pitting. The original grips are gone.It has a conversion cylinder that has not seen much use.I have pics but they dont show the damage well.If you need pics I will have to add them later. If any one has an idea of its value please let me know I need money soon.I may not be able to get to a computer to answer you for a couple days. Thanks for any help you may have.

Sell the gun with it's original cylinder as a parts gun, since parts are no longer available from Ruger. At $200 or so it should sell quickly. Sell the conversion cylinder separately for 2/3 of the price of a new one, and I bet it will move quickly also.

Good luck.

Thanks gies. That is what I had in mind. The barrel is a mess but the other parts are in good shape. The trigger is the best part of this pistol. Thanks again.
